Here is a question I am curious about. I know there are quite a few of the posters in this area who dont consider Federer the greatest player ever at this moment (and I am not neccessarily saying that is right either, in fact I understand where these people are coming from). If Federer were to complete the Calender Slam in anyone of the next 2 or 3 years, and I dont think this is likely at all personally and would be slightly shocked by it in fact, would those of you who dont feel he is the greatest ever currently then feel he would be. I would appreciate it if only those who feel he isnt the current greatest ever voted.

Yeah I think 19 majors would do the trick.

I'm really not sure...For some he never will be no matter what he does. By winning the French and completing the French Wimbledon double this year he moved up to number 2 behind Laver, I am honestly not sure what it would take for him to be number 1...I'd like to see him Beat Nadal at the French though.

I think no one can ever be greatest of all time. Hard to objectively judge

"For those who believe Federer isnt the greatest ever only if he won the Calender Slam"

    Does this make sense?

I think it says: if he won the Calender Slam, Federer isn't the greatest ever.

Maybe it does make sense, if the author is saying that he does not believe that Federer is the the GOAT, even if he does win a Grand Slam.

I think he means that some view him as the GOAT anyway, so he's asking those who don't think he is whether him winning a calendar slam would change their mind.

Sorry I worded that completely wrong. What I mean is if you are someone who believes Federer is not currently the greatest ever (and for the record I am one of those) do you believe if he wins the Calender Slam in the future he then is the greatest ever or not.

Exactly. I know there are some who consider him the GOAT already. So I am mostly referring to those who currently dont.

Anyway my vote in my own poll was the 3rd option. Whether he would become the GOAT in my eyes if he wins the Calender Slam would depend on a few things. Who he beat to do it, if he beat Nadal in a French Open final on the way to it, and if he has longevity of being near the top and winning slams atleast several more years. It wouldnt be an automatic yes or no.

I think the condition of beating Nadal in a French Open final is unfair, seeing as that is not just a test of Federer's greatness but Nadal's too (as Nadal would have to reach the final too), over which Federer has no control. For example if Nadal never reached the final of Roland Garros again but Federer won the next 3 in a row, surely the fact that he never defeated Nadal there would be an unfair criticism.

I think it would depend on a few other factors, such as how his statistics stack up against the other players ahead of him on a GOAT-list. There is Tilden's Davis Cup record. There is Rosewall's longevity. There is Gonzales's eight years as world no. 1.

For instance, Tilden is second on my GOAT-list and he never won a Grand Slam. Budge did win a Grand Slam and I place Fed ahead of him already.

So in my opinion, no, a true Grand Slam would not in and of itself guarantee Fed the top GOAT spot. (Although winning 19 slams and a Grand Slam would certainly move him up a few spots.)
