I wouldn't put it past him. The guy is a living legend, too bad Goran is gone, between the two of them they had it made.

He was about 18 and he just sort of stopped playing. He was fined $6000.

Only Safin would come back to this tournamnet and be in 3 finals...and WIN one. Yes, it's AO we're talking about.

    exactly.
I remember hearing about this and I thought it was funny too.
He has the distinction of being the only man fined in a grand slam for not trying!
I think it was the 2000 AusOpen, and he was even thinking of giving up tennis I heard. Then he went on to win the US Open that same year.
Only Marat could have a tale like that.

I would love to see a video of this match.:)

The point that got him fined was on a serve from his opponent. It was in. Instead of swinging at the ball, he caught it. It was at an Australian Open, I'm pretty sure. I think he's the only player to ever be penalized for tanking, although others should have been--Kafelnikov, Tarango, maybe even Roddick.

Agassi did the same thing a number of years ago. He wasn't tanking, quite the opposite. He was killing some guy in early round match and basically did it to show him up. Not a classy move. He wasn't fined - In my opinion he should have been.

I'm not sure how a rule like this would read , maybe something like

" Deliberately showing an opponent how to win a tennis match and thus making him feel humiliated when he loses"

Subject to psychological testing of defeated opponent.

    Minimum $10,000 fine.

I remember this. I think it was a Davis Cup match. Total a-hole move, the announcers could not believe it.

LOL, nice little contradiction there. Safin can get away with anything because all of these guys have little man-crushes on him.

Man crushes? Nah, he's just the kind of guy every guy wishes he was. And the kind of guy every girl wishes every man was.

    Life is simple.

The story of Agassi is like this: He was destroying Martin Jaite in Buenos Aires during a Davis macht, but in that game, Jaite was 40/0 or so..., then Agassi took one serve with his hand and went to his bench. He said latter that he was getting cold and preferred to end the game rigth away.
That is why Gaudio, who was at the stadium rooting for his older friend and hero, performed an insulting dance the first time he beat Agassi on a tournament years later.
I think Agassi matured a lot from his younger personality.
