If I wanted to get new floating clamps so I could maintain tension more efficiently on a gamma x-2 machine, what would you recommend?thanks!

Stringway 3 flying clamps are the best on the market bar none.

I bought the double flying clamps from Stringway. The triple seemed too big and would get in the way of stringing the crosses. Great clamps, holds tension very well, easy to use and is easy on the string. I spent $107 shipped on these clamps... pricey but I know they will last a long time.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, I hear Alpha's clamps aren't too bad either. They are slim in profile and are $25 per clamp if I remember correctly.

I can vouch for the alphas... kind of. They're excellent clamps- solid metal, not a plastic part on them. They're clamps that I feel I can smash into a concrete wall and not really damage them. However, they don't hold tension spectacularly, and there is give. Still, I'd take Alpha's over Gamma's flying clamps any day.

Clamps fall into two categories: flying and fixed. Fixed clamps are affixed to the machine. You'll see these on all high end machine. Flying clamps "fly through the air" and are not fixed to the machine. Fixed clamps will minimize give when stringing. The x-2 does not support fixed clamps (in case you weren't aware).

I second this comments. I bought the x-2, sold the clamps on **** for $50 and bought the alpha clamps for $50. even deal for much better clamps.

Or... you can get an Alpha String Pal. It's a 2 point and works great for me. Plus you get metal clamps.

As for better clamps to upgrade. A double and triple clamp from stringway is the best you can get for floating/flying clamps.

I don't agree with you on the too big and get in the way of stringing crosses. I have the triple and it makes stringing crosses easier! 2 reasons. First, it can span the larger gap on open string pattern racquets near the head and throat. Second, because it clamps onto 3 strings, it holds tension much better. Almost 0 drawback.

That's interesting... I see now where the triple would be useful. I originally thought it was too big because I always had problems stringing the top and bottom crosses with the bulky Gamma floating clamps. It was too big to fit in the tiny space it never clamped the string fully, so the top and bottom cross strings were always loose until I got the stringway clamps.
