I enjoyed reading this article by Andrew C. Smith in TennisWeek regarding discussing what "greatness" is as it applies to the usual suspects.

In the end, I agree with his assessment.....

pete sampras'killer instinct was on full display during the safin and hewitt blowouts at the usopen.

    kidding aside.

the article makes some good points and some equally bad ones.

It's not an unbiased article, the first 5 paragraphs spell out his reasons why he doesn't think Federer is GOAT.

    Another point of contention

Does A. Smith think, imply or insinuate adaptability of game is more important than effectiveness of game? Cedric Pioline sure had more shots and versatility than Jim Courier but in terms of beating the rest of the field for titles, Courier's game was far more effective.

What are the other two acronyms? I know what GOAT is, because I've seen it on this forum a trillion times.

I shouldn't spoonfeed, but check out the 4th to last paragraph. Well, read the whole thing.

I understand what he is saying, but I have to disagree. When he says that present players use the techniques developed before, he forgets that the bar has been raised. My father says that he studied in college stuff I studied in high school. Every generation benefits from the previous one (most of the time), but has to do much more to achieve similar greatness because the standards have risen. By that reasoning, Federer is definitely the GOAT.

Exactly. In my school system we didn't have to take a second language until our freshroom year of highschool and even then we only needed to take two years of it.

Now they teach children Spanish in elementary school.

    Same thing applies to sports.

In a public school? My son is in the 8th grade and is taking a second language as an elective. The earliest he could have done it was the 7th grade. The official requirement is only one year of a second language in high school (might be two, I forget).

But the trend is in that direction. There are now state level standardized tests every year and exit exams for high school diploma. The college entry criteria have gone up. So many students now do the APs.

It is never easier or harder. It was easier before because standards were lower and competition was less. It was tougher before because opportunities and infrastructure were lacking.

the article starts out well, and I agree with it.
until it shot itself in the foot, when it started to compare Sampras with Fed.
