GOAT Stalemate Between the Masters (2019 Wimbledon)

Federer cemented himself as a much, much greater grass court player than Nadal with his semi-final tour de force. Federer would have the slammed the GOAT door hard today with a victory over the much younger Djokovic in the final today. Even though Djokovic won their strategic masterclass today, Grand Masterer has achieved a minimum of GOAT Stalemate today by nearly winning against the much younger 5 time champion. Even should they have more slams in the end, Nadal and Djokovic will never be stand alone GOAT after this Wimbledon even if they lead the slam count.

Utter nonsense. Federer hasn't been able to beat Djokovic even once since 2015. If Djokovic didn't lose the plot in 2017 to mid 2018 he would already have left Federer in the dust in the slam race.

You are so young and naive that being goat is about the slam race. Trust me, you will think differently 10 years from now.

And I thought this was about how Tsitsipas and Zverev would split the US summer 1000s to split the future goat debate between them.

Anyway, younger playa won, @Meles excite
They both have upsides still for two years for Zverev and three for Tsits, but no after this weekend the GOAT sweepstakes have even myself interested. Federer easily comes out the moral victor this weekend.:p

If Federe didn't have food poisoning and mono at 2008 Auz Open, then it could easily have been 21-15 in slam count.;)

IF IF IF. IF Federer had served an ace at match point the slam gap between the two would be 21-15, and we wouldn't have an idiot like spencer gore making idiotic IF scenarios. the fact is federer at 38 played a rival and current world no 1 six years younger than him for five hours had two championship points against him. so i give you another IF. IF federer and djokovic were same age, there is no doubt who would have won today. federer would have won in 4 sets just like 2012 wimbledon.

Which gives enough space for Djokovic/Nadal fans to say that even now their favourite players are GOATs, as neither Federer fans don't consider number of GS as valid argument anymore.

And saying that being in position to play GS final at age 38 makes you GOAT is nonsense. Djokovic/Nadal fans can also say then that what makes you GOAT is actually winning GS at age when you can't still legally buy booze in any store in USA.

Djoko wins Wimby for 16, but despite all the handwringering here, with the great Nadal victory and this oh so wonderful and close final Fed comes out the moral victor. This could be his last gasp at a major, but it was a great, great gasp.

If Nole gets to 22 slams or even more by hoovering them up over the next few years, his grass court victories will be diminished by this epic chess match. Throw in the absence of Murray and its a real issue.

Its worse for Nadal, Federer has slammed the door hard on Nadal with his master class victory against Nadal. Fed is the moral victor with the 2017 Auz Open final win and Nole put the final nail in Nadal's Auz Open coffin with his domination in the 2019 final. Nadal will be too unbalanced as even two more slams off clay seem almost wishful thinking right now with Djoko 2.0 blocking the way.

After today nothing short of three more years of something close to 2015 domination of the tour may be enough. 4 of 5 slams in the bag, but the bar just got raised higherer. Have been bored by the GOAT race, but now.

And Thiem come to think of it no small part of the picture with his Nole slam train derailment at RG.

like I said, you really can argue anything.

Theres no such thing as moral victors. There are winners and there are losers. That’s how sports works.

No stalemate. I will never consider Federer goat material after this repeated kind of performance.

Nice try. Even Nole now says its all about the slams.:sneaky: All those little intangibles are rolling Federe's way. Vacuum Era is Vacuum Era whether your drunk or not.;)

Did you see what Nole did to him at 2014/2015 Wimbledon? Its not out of the question for Fed to actually beat Djokovic for a Wimbledon title when nearly 40.o_O Yes things slipped through his hands when he got a little tight, but nerves are a tricky thing when you're and older player with a higher risk game. Djokovic could go into pusher mode and did in this match and its just much, much easier with that style of play to hold it together.

Its many things, but to my mind Federer nearly mastered his two younger rivals in the best form their fans could have hoped for at this Wimbledon. The age gap is huge and just cannot be ignored.

Djokovic needs to string 2-3 2015 like years in a row to overcome these intangibles. 4 of 5 slams pretty amazing, but he needs to dominate a bit at Masters level as well otherwise any further slam bonanza is just going to be seen as vacuum era payback. Federe has turned this into horseshoes/hand grenades, close will be more than enough for him after this Wimby run.
