Golfer's Elbow Comeback Strategy

    Hey everyone,

    I am currently a div. iii college player and I had some issues with golfer's elbow in the later stages of my junior career (my junior/senior yr. of high school).

    Recently, my golfer's elbow has resurfaced and I was wondering if any of you have experience dealing with or coming back from golfer's elbow. I don't want this to be a persistent problem in my playing career and I want to take care of it now.

    Some things that stand out:

    -Play with larger grip size
    -Play with more flexible racket

    What do you guys think about this? I am playing with a Wilson BLX Six.One 95 16x18, which according to TW has a 66 stiffness rating. Maybe time to switch to a more flexible stick?

    I had the signs of it coming, Bought a green flexbar, took out the poly strings and went to softer sticks.

    So basically soft stick, syn gut strings, flexbar, and im good.

    Went to an orthopedic and he told me to strengthen my front deltoids and forearm muscles. You may need to strengthen your bicep and triceps also.
    Additionally I was taking collagen pills as that is what your tendon is made of as well as using an ultrasound machine.

    I asked the rehabilitation specialist what they recommend I purchase as I wanted to do it at home myself. They recommended a 1mhz ultrasound machine that pulsates on and off. Then I took it in and had them show me how to use it specific to my injury. Additionally you will want to ice the elbow, just do Not do this before playing tennis, working out or stretching.

    After taking about 6 weeks off tennis but starting a light to progressively heavier workout after 2 weeks off I returned to playing tennis. Everyone is different and you will need to assess how fast you progress and when you should hold off from playing and when you can return to a full schedule.

    The other thing he had me doing was stretching the forearm muscles which stretch the tendon as the muscle is attached to the tendon which is attached to the bone. Again you are going to want to start lightly and stretch it up and down and with a twisting motion.

    This post plus Power Player's equipment recommendations pretty much sum it all up. In addition, I have an electrostimulation machine, I do a hot epsom salt soak and use heat packs before I play.

    Was the GE diagnosed by a DR?

    If you have an acute tendon injury such as Golfer's Elbow do not stress it while it is healing (even if you are in the final at Wimbledon). The days and weeks immediately after the injury are very important for proper healing. See the many recent threads on tennis elbow (the same thing on the other side of the elbow).

    ^yup...tendinosis needs healing time. think ssgator recommends hitting like mikeler - drop shot, lob, like that to avoid stress on tendons. :)

    Great to hear. Do you all know if a more flexible racket lends itself to any particular playing style more than another?

    The GE was diagnosed by an athletic trainer with a private practice in Northern California. I was lucky enough to receive free treatment from him throughout high school (he currently sees NFL runningback Maurice Jones-Drew on a monthly basis)

    As Bad_Call is joking (somewhat), I'm finding that I play a little more defensively with the very flexible Prince Exo3 Tour (16x18). It is nice and comfy but I'm still searching for the right string combo.

    Summer of '11 I had it really bad, and tried everything mentioned in this thread without success. I had the surgery late fall of '11 and was playing again by 2/12. At first, I switched from poly to multi, but have gone back to a full bed of poly (18g Tour Bite) but did move to a softer frame (Head Speed MP 16/19). For me, the surgery was very successful and I have had no problem since.

    Plenty of great advice above.

    Your own exercise regimen + the Flexbar can really build up the forearm muscles so that the chance for a recurrence is decreased.


    Most find they can return earlier with a flexible frame and softer strings.


    A key in returning to tennis is to start with short sessions and no serving.

    Gradually increase the length of the sessions.

    When you do start to serve, start with no more than 30 serves, including warmups, and only slowly increase the numbers.

    Resist the temptation to return to match play too early. It is very hard to resist continuing to play once a match starts, and you don't want to get into a long 3 setter that will set you back for many weeks.

    Went through this a few years ago. I cut way down on tennis (fortunately I like to run) and recovery was about 4-6 months. I don't know if recovery would have been faster without tennis - maybe. I bought a much softer racquet (KPS88 full poly -> Pro Kennex with Multi) as a quick fix. It wasn't. It hurt about 90% of the KPS which mean no playing for a while. So rest, rest, rest.

    I do regular strength training - never tried the flexbar though.

    Cfed has been recommending a hand gripper for years. I finally bought one and it seems to be the final nail in the coffin for ridding myself of TE.

    Definitely agree with most of the advice above. Some thoughts from my experiences:
    1) Strengthen with a Flexbar, or at resistance bands and weights
    2) Regular stretches for GE/TE
    3) Softer rackets (Volkl, Dunlops, Prince exo3 tour)
    4) It also helps if you warm up the forearm below in two way. Firstly do those forearm exercises with a band or light weights. Secondly wear a neoprene warming sleeve over the elbow an hour before play. Part of the theory here is that increased bloodflow to the medial tip of the elbow helps it lubricate, heal and not get injured.
    5) The last one is a little controversial as it goes against the received wisdom. The received wisdom says use the heaviest racquet you can handle. I am suggesting that too heavy a racquet will exacerbate the issue so try and go a little lighter. This mostly applies if you have a whippy forehand. Often the whip comes from the forearm muscles. If your racquet is too heavy this will put too much strain on the medial epicondyle.

    Good stuff Ramjet. Stretches seem to help quite a bit. Whippy forehands and heavy rackets don't mix very well like you said.

    will try to remember putting on the sleeve before getting in the car, or on the bike, or after lacing up the roller blades. :)

    I use the sleeve as well. A heating pad that you can wrap around your arm works even better.

    When my elbow was a little more sore I did. Now I forget to do it because I usually don't feel anything after a match.

    How do you all feel about basketball shooting sleeves? Do they provide enough compression to help with GE?

    I know originally Iverson used the sleeve due to an issue with his elbow and as a preventative measure.

    TW sells a sleeve and you can see Chris using it from time to time in hitting. I never tried one of these but I considered it. It may also just help by keeping the area warm.

    Sleeves are great for keeping the area warm. Heating pads before a match also work well.

    Bumping this thread to say that I started using some of the techniques listed here:

    I switched rackets to a very low RA stiffness rating in my prior HEAD Speed IG 300 (customized to 12.2 oz) and now I've transitioned a Wilson Pro Staff 97 at ~340grams (11.9-12.0oz). I realize the RA difference between the Prostaff and HEAD Speed is substantial in a 66 v 60 comparison. However, I feel that Wilson's Kevlar/graphite layup absorbs pace and and shock brilliantly - protecting my elbow and shoulder joints nicely.

    I've transitioned to the softest polyester on TW's index (Topspin Cyber Flash)

    Stretching and strengthening using resistance bands has helped me gain more mobility (i.e. extending on a follow-through after a deep 1HBH or reverse forehand).

    Nike compression sleeves during my last college season and realized tremendous results in regards to increased circulation and reduced pain during matches


    Still haven't tried the flex bar, but partially due to me not having any need to

    The elbow is feeling better and stronger, was wondering if anyone playing with the Prostaff has felt any pain? I only switched about 2 weeks ago, and those with golfer's elbow understand that the pain can come on gradually
