Golubev- why hasn't he achieved more?

I thought it would be a nice change to talk about some one other than Federer and Nadal, :)

Anyway Golubev seems to be a very talented player with very nice strokes. Last weekend I thought he played very well in Davis Cup, winning one and losing the other singles match.
But he seems to have under-achieved in a way.

This is his career at the moment->
    Ranked 59
    SINGLES CAREER TITLES (1):
    2010 (1) Hamburg (Outdoor/Clay)
    SINGLES CAREER FINALIST (2):
    2010 (1) Kuala Lumpur (Indoor/Hard)
    2008 (1) St. Petersburg (Indoor/Hard)

He is still relatively young at 26; so could he possibly improve on his results and make a run at some point in his career?

This guy is high on talent. Was really upset last couple of years when he was languishing even at the challengers.

He seems to be on the way up..Deserves to be around 30-40 ranked. Hopefully he will take inspiration from the likes of Gulbis.

As proven time and again, talent isn't everything.

Yeah but his forehand is a real weapon and his backhand was good too. I think he should be top 30-40 at least. Top 20 you are right, his serve isn't good enough.

not sure. how is his movement/fitness?

i remember seeing him play maybe two or three years ago and thinking his game looked pretty excellent, really. and then...nothing, really. who knows, maybe he's lazy, personal issues, head case, could be a million things.

but his strokes are very nice, he certainly has the tools.

Hadn't seem him in a long time until the match with Wawa. Damn, the guy generates pace as easy as any of the game's legendary big hitters. Seeming rally balls suddenly fly by for a 98MPH winner.

He just doesn't have the full package, apparently, or is in the midst of putting it all together.

From what I saw his biggest problem is that he can't keep up the intensity for more than a set or two after he has played a match or two.

Yes, true. And apart from perhaps a dodgy serve as noted by posters, I seem to notice he doesn't "defend" well; other great players are able to somehow get the ball back to force one more shot from the opponent, whereas Golubev can't seem to do that on a consistent basis.
