    My measurement of Great is:

1/ Even match up of 2 great players playing their best over a sustained period of the match.

2/ Where you don't know what the final result will be until near the end of the match

3/ Amazing shots played at tense moments

4/ A Match dripping with Intensity

    My Opinion

Clay: Italian Open final 2006 - Nadal vs Federer

Grass: Wimbledon final 2008 - Nadal vs Federer

Hard: ????? I find this hard to determine. Some people would say Agassi Sampras 2001 US Open but I'm at not all sure - be interested in what people think.

Indoor : I didn't see it but perhaps Federer Nalbandian - Masters Cup 2005 ?

What do people think were the greatest matches by surface of the 2000's?

Hard: Safin Vs Fed AO 05 perhaps?
: Andy Roddick vs Younes El Aynaoui AO 03
: Pete Vs Agassi USO 01 (only downside is that it wasn't a 5-setter)

Best hardcourt match of this decade: Roddick vs. El Aynaoui, 2003 Aussie Open.

    Watch it.

    Watch it now.

I'd say Coria v Nadal in Rome would be the best clay match i've seen this decade.

The other surfaces are harder to choose from for me personally.

Interesting how these are all matches Federer lost, just shows how well you have to play to beat him when he is healthy.

I have one question. What is the one thing your three responses all have in common?

How about Federer playing in all of them. Sampras, Agassi, Nadal can't say that. Thats one more reason why Federer is GOAT. End of discussion.

Although I do think he's the GOAT...I don't see how this is one reason why he is..

    Top of my head...

    Hard
    Sampras vs Agassi 2001 USO
    Federer vs Safin 2005 Melbourne

    Clay
Federer vs Nadal 2006 Rome MS
Federer vs Gasquet 2005 Monte Carlo MS

    Grass
    Federer vs Sampras 2001 WIMBLEDON
    Rafter vs Ivanisevic 2001 WIMBLEDON
    Federer vs Nadal 2008 WIMBLEDON

    Indoor
    Federer vs Nalbandian 2005 TMC

    -------------------------------------

Funny how the three epic matches Federer played in in 2005 (all going the distance and he had match point on all three) were also the ones he lost. Like someone else already said, when he won, he won by a mile. And when he lost, that's what it took to defeat him.

  20. That's the correct answer.

Nadal-Verdasco may also qualify, except that it was kinda predictable who would win in the end.

Do yourself a favor and watch everything about this match.

Possibly the best match ever, and definitely the best shot-making of this century.

    Clicky, clicky.

I'd put that at no2 on HC :) (I don't think it was predictable though, the way verdasco played the 4th set tie-break was  )

    nadal-coria rome 2005 F at no2 on clay and 2007 wimby finals b/w fed-nadal at no2 on grass

Biased or not, I'm going to say that Ivanisevic/Rafter was not only the best match of this decade, but the best of all-time.
