Unfortunate to hear. He shouldn't rush himself if he's not 100%. That's one lesson he should take from his friend Safin.

That's a shame - hopefully he can make Wimby - but only if he's 100%.

Bad news. Grass won't be the better surface to heal that.

Davydenko's a non-factor at Wimbledon anyways, he's much more missed at RG granted, but at Wimbledon it's NBD.

Plus he's the guy who a few years ago called Wimbledon the most boring tourney in the world. I'm sure he's not losing sleep over missing it due to injury.

This seroiusly sucks,I was so looking forward to see him play on grass. He even said that's his favourite surface.

This year is overall horribly plagued with all sorts of player's injuries, don't like it one bit.

I hope he heals and make it on time. I was interested to see how his new form would translate to the other faster surfaces. Surely damaging.

Not to trivialize a real injury but the real in-form guys who could've made some damage at majors are getting injured left and right... ala.. Delpo.. Davy.. now Gulbis.. though Gulbis is not at their consistent level yet

If someone's opponent having an injury is luck, then count Federer lucky for all 3 of his GS tournaments in the last year and a half.

i thought it's your own fault if you have an injury and it's part of the game. Federer not having injuries is part of his "conditioning" and his GOATness

He needs it. Right now he's got a string of guys whose best form can bother nadal. If gulbis pulls out he might get a nice breather before the potential isner/youzhny, soderling, murray trio. Jesus. :(

Right. Hell, with this kind of draw Nadal could potentially have NO straight sets and four or more matches that go all the way to 5 sets. That's a big ask in terms of mental and physical resources. And wasn't Rafa suffering from a niggle in his leg?

I think the mental resources are more of a concern.

Basically he has to be focussed the entire time he will be playing isner, soderling and murray and can't really afford to lose serve in any of those matches. Physically I think the isner and soderling matches should be ok even if they go 4 or 5 sets, they are mostly going to be fast points anyway.

But murray is a serious match for nadal now, nadal was playing at his highest level this year in their AO match and murray just outplayed him. Overall murray is not playing as well now as during the early part of the year, but still he is not far from that level imo.

I agree. Murray always seems to bring his best against Nadal. Because of Murray's strong backhand and his anticipation, Nadal's serve basically becomes useless against Murray. Plus Rafa actually finds it hard to close the point against Murray who tracks down most of Nadal's topspin shots. Murray does to Nadal what Nadal does to most of his opponents i.e forces him to go for more.

All that said, I would still back Nadal against Murray, not least because it's grass and the fact that Nadal will do everything he can to avoid a third successive beatdown on the grandslam level.

The biggest threat to Nadal (before the final) IMO is Soderling. Lots of people underestimate the Swede on grass. I really do believe that if Robin wins a GS, it will be on USO or Wimb. It took some scintillating tennis from Fed last year to take Robin out. Even then the match was extremely close and could have easily turned. If Soderling's serve is ON, he will be unbeatable. He will put loads of pressure on Nadal's serve, bcoz one lapse could decide the set. And even if Rafa serves well, the sets will be decided on Tiebreaks. which is a scary proposition indeed.

    I agree with nearly everything tennisfan3. :).

I think I would still put murray as the bigger threat than soderling because murray not only holds easier than nadal but like you say he also neutralizes nadal's serve relatively easily. Nadal's got no breathing room in his matches with murray and on top of that murray's a crafty guy who can hit special shots from all over the court because of his feel for the ball. I am interested in seeing where there matches go in the future, my guess is that nadal will have to take some spin of his serves, sacrifice the high 1st serve % and go for bigger/flatter serves to compete with H-H with murray on the faster surfaces.

Great post bolo. I agree with most of it.

But I still think the biggest danger, for Nadal, is one that EVEN Federer suffers from. That is playing a red hot big server, early in the tournament. Of course, Federer is a better returner (than Nadal is), but nobody is immune to an Isner type of serve, when it clicks on all cylinders. So in that sense, I could see Soderling or Isner having one of their best serving days and taking Rafa out.

I don't think Murray is capable of that kind of serving. Sure he's served excellently againt Rafa in the past, but we all know that the 1st serve percentage for Murray is ALWAYS a weakness. And if he falters on that against Nadal (which he didn't in AO '10 and UsO SF), the match will be over, not least because Murray's 2nd serve is putrid.

Finally the most important factor for the Nadal-Murray match, will be Murray's ROS. On hard courts, he can punish Rafa from the get go, even on first serves- he is just too good in this area of his game. On grass, It's easy to forget, but Nadal's serve is SOO much more effective. It almost take a life of it's own.

Again if they meet, it will be in the 2nd week, when the grass wears down, and it start to take spin much better. Nadal's superior power and spin would allow him to control the baseline which in turn will force Murray to play an uncomfortable style of tennis.

In summary, I don't believe Nadal will lose in a 3rd successive slam match against Murray. Not on his favorite slam and certainly NOT on grass. If Nadal gets beaten it will be most probably by Soderling or even by Isner (although that is less likely).

  32. Definitely a break for Nadal, but it would be ironic if Nadal lost to someone else in the third round.

Man, on this forum everything comes down to Nadal v.s Fed. Poor Gulbis man, he's missing arguably the biggest tournament on the tennis calendar. Maybe he's happy to chill and watch the world cup with some women. lol.

I think it depends on which player you're talking about. The sentiment was different when it happened on Roger's side. Now, a bunch of moaning and groaning hoping someone takes Rafa out.

    How transparent and pathetic!

I like what you are saying TennisFan3. I also wonder whether murray's serve performances from the last couple of matches versus nadal will hold up in repeated encounters. His overall record would suggest no, I agree with that. :) I think there is some room for what you say about nadal's serve and abilities off the baseline on grass too. Nadal's been very good on the surface for a while and murray still hasn't made a wimbledon final so nadal must be doing something right on the surface.

What do you think about the potential verdasco/murray match?

yes oddjack, but Gulbis has never beaten Nadal and last time Nadal played soderling, nadal destroyed him in straight sets.

Seriously, we know that u r full of hatred vs Nadal, but u need to find someone else other then Soderling. Nadal pretty much knows how to play soderling. :)

when has gulbis ever beaten Nadal breakpoint?

and actually, roger is the one who is lucky since he didnt have to play Nadal in last years wimbledon. If you think Gulbis was actually going to beat Nadal at wimbledon, you are living in a fantasy world. Just like u believed Soderling was going to repeat his victory at the fo final this year and we all know what happened there. :)

Nadal is too good a player to lose to gulbis at this year's wimbledon, far too good a player.

To be the luckiest player alive, Nadal needs a couple of other players to injure themselves and pull out. Federer as always got a clown draw full of his pigeons, while Nadal got dangerous players out for blood.

its funny how Nadal is considered "lucky" against a player that he has NEVER lost to. These same clowns kept saying that Nadal would lose to Soderling and how nadal is so lucky soderling isnt in his draw, blah blah, and we all know how convincingly Nadal thrashed soderling.

here's a reminder to all the haters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh30WN3toHg

Over 5 sets he is a problem.

I tought this is a Gulbis thread....Not a Fed vs Nadal thread.

And it was not a fantasy that Gulbis has a real chance on grass.Nadal lost Lopez ....Ernie is better than Lopez in all elements of the game.
