There can be ties in some timed events, in which case two of a particular medal are awarded but count as a half in the tally.

Generally it's the pugilist sports which have a tennis-style draw where they don't have a playoff for the bronze medal - for obvious reasons (head trauma :p ). In those cases both competitors earn a bronze medal.

As someone says above, it sort of gets counted as a half if you're alongside another country in the medal's tally.

But the UK is listed as having like 13.5 gold medals in tennis.

    How does that work?

Back in the early days, doubles teams didn't have to be from the same nation. Sounds daft now, but there you go. That's how they have half medals: a tie for silver (such as we've seen in a couple of swimming events this year) or two bronzes being awarded because there's no play-off would result in a full medal for each nation.

I have no idea what's going on with the wrestling in that table. Britain won 3 gold medals in 1908.
