Have Nike got it wrong with the shorts?

I have two pairs of Nike shorts, both on Rafa's line from 2012. Problem is like this: One is XL, one is L but they are very wide!
The XL is out of the question too big, my mistake since I got used to XL, I usually get my football shorts L or XL and they are never too wide ( + you can tie'em up just in case ) since they usually also have a bag inside of them and they feel OK at that size especially when stretching, but they're useless in tennis cause I want to keep a ball in the pocket.

Problem is tennis these tennis shorts can't be tied up like the others, I have to use a belt for the L else they would fall off even with the pockets empty ( if I add a tennis ball or anything, like a lighter, makes it even worse ) which is weird since they're not made for it. Thinking I have an average waste size, why in hell are they making these sizes? Anywhere you look in stores L, XL and not to mention XXL are always on sale and almost nobody buys them cause they're too large for an average male.

I should go S or M, I don't think I had S clothes since I was in 4th grade , also, they should rethink these sizes for pants that can't be tied up cause people get tricked like me being used to buying 34 waist jeans and being surprised they need a 30-32 tennis shorts. How weird is it for me to buy an XL shirt and it's short equivalent size S?

I'm not following you - if you're a 34 I don't see how you could 'get used to' XL pants and not have to use 1 hand to hold them up. 34 should be a Med.

And yes, the S and M are usually gone by the time a line goes on sale. That's the sad reality - and not just Nike. So if you like a particular line you have to buy it at list or take your chances - might get lucky on the Big Auction Site. Good luck.

My point was that the L and XL sizes are exaggerated as they don't fit any normal persons waist, while they can't even be tied up up cause their made to be worn only if they fit perfectly with no exceptions. While I could fix the problem with a belt, which is totally weird as they're not made to use one and uncomfy when playing and I have to take it off for good when I need to go to the bathroom.

Is there anyway I could reduce the waist size by modifying them at a tailor? They're Rafa's Aussie 2012 version.

I just bought a pair of Adidas tennis shorts, but while they can be tied up, the pockets are a disaster for tennis balls or casual wear ( phone, wallet, cig pack ).
I am just saying, as I am 1.88 in height/ 78 kg, and XL short is OK from Nike, but at the same time I might have to choose an S or M for them not to fall off my butt, the sizes don't match at all.

Have to say I agree.

I'm 6ft 4 (1.93 to you US folk!) and 18 stone (114KG). I've worn XL and XXL nike shorts which both fit me fine (the XL can be quite tight on the thigh).

If you are a 34" waist, I'm not sure why you've ever picked up an XL and had it fit properly?

If you want your shorts to fit, forget about tailoring, forget about belts.... buy a smaller pair :)

I wear US10.5/11 shoes but I have for every single sport shoes to get EU11.5. Brands fit differently too: Babolat and Adidas fit short (toe jamming), Lotto fits long. And it also varies between models: the CB4.3 fitted differently than the AMC while being about the same length.

I also wear M Shirts and have to buy L pants, and I'm 5'9/155lbs with a very thin upper body but big tights. I have to consistently tailor my pants so that they fit my thinner waist, as well as my shirts because they're often very wide. And I agree with West Coast Ace: because up there fits XL doesn't mean that your pants should fit XL too. Also, what do you mean by "Normal person"? What is a "normal person"? I haven't personally seen people that fitted exactly the same. EDIT: Never needed it for sports clothes though.

If you want to wear XL shorts and XL shirts, get bigger. There's no miracle solution. Eat more and squat a lot. If you're tall and thin, well suck it up and get smaller shorts, wear a good belt or/and go to the tailor. Try different brands.

I'm 1.88 and 80 kg at present, was ~98-100 kg till 6-7 months ago and bought an XL pair: would fall unless I used a belt.
Got an L, same model ( even though I hoped for a dark one, found only that ) let's just say...it was OK but with nothing in the pocket ( no more than a cig lighter! ). Else, they would fall off...so that was me 20 kg over what my normal bodyweight.
Now I'm at a normal weight, maybe 5 kg over what I want, would go for an M...but would risk an S, especially since I would like be in the /70-75/ kg window by the end of summer.
Dunno if taylors can fix these kind of tennis shorts.

Was not saying I wanna buy XL top, XL shorts...XL shoes, XL hat...Just that it's weird to go XL on a top and S on the botton despite being tall but not exactly thin ( a thin guy would probably need an XXS... )

I found a tailor here in my city that's amazing. I got tired of trying to find Mediums in the older Rafa shirts that i've been wanting. I realized you can buy a Large, or in some cases XL and my tailor was able to make them mediums for just $20.
I've collected almost all of his polos and from 2009, and 2010 now. Amazing shirts. By far my favorite two years of Nike Rafa stuff. I wish they'd go back to putting Rafa in polos...
Small price to pay imo.

I made same mistake, now only buy size M Nike shorts. Even L are too big, even though my Nike t-shirts are L at least

I wear a 34 waist in general and have found that the mediums are just a tad too tight, moving up to Large works perfectly though on some Nike shorts, but not on others.
My advice is to order one of each then send one back if you're not familiar with the cut of the short.
