When everybody is using Gilbertisms, you know the end is near.

What are your least favorite announcer catch phrases?

It never referred to hitting a shot wide or long, did it? Not before Gilbert. I'm pretty sure about that, but could be wrong.

No, but it's used in other sports so it's not just something he came up with.

flippin hate that Gilbert. He will just say random jock-sounding rhyming couplets and rattle them off mechanically without giving a cr@p about whether they're relevant to the situation he's describing, or what he's even trying to say by using them.

"She's 88, and out the gate!!"

    WTF?

Just comes across as a brain-dead tool.

As Robbie Koenig would say, "Hello!" is RIDICULOUS!

Gilbert is a genius. Anybody who can take a complete lack of athletic talent, get to #4 in the world, and on top of that become a great coach and spend his life coming up with complete nonsense and get paid for it, that man is a genius.

I won't argue that Gilbert the Player and Gilbert the Coach should get accolades for their achievements, but Gilbert the Announcer is just plain annoying.

...and that is why I mentioned in the Tennis Channel thread that I cannot stand McEnroe as a commentator...

It gets on my nerves when a commentator describes a shot as "Out of this world!"

Unless it's Federer shanking a backhand, in which case it could just be describing the trajectory of the ball.

    "Somebody dial 911..."

    "HELLO"

"RF / RN ambassador for the game blah blah role model blah blah WE KNOW ALREADY!"

I find with commentators that when RF or RN hit a wonderful forehand, drop shot serve etc. they go absolutely berserk, but if a lower ranked player hits an equally impressive combination or shot against them, all they get is "that's more like it" "well played" or the like, it rather creates an illusion of relatively normal winners by those two being better than they are.

I think the bolded ones are Robbie Koenig's. Especially the first one. The second one Pmac is guilty off, but not Gilbert. That is perhaps the thing I like the most about Gilbert, he lays off on the "Roger and Rafa are the greatest ambassadors the game has every seen. They are sweet, humble, gifted..."

I believe it was Fred Stolle that said "there's too much mustard on his hot dog" when referring to Agassi.
Maybe this is a common phrase in Australia...

But Robbie Koenig's "when God was a boy..." is also classic.
