Irvin, I need you help. I have some self proclaimed string expert telling me that Genesis Black Magic 17g is much much stiffer then Luxilon Timo, Ace and Black Widow. He also claims the local tennis shop agrees with this and recommended he use Black Widow. This shop recommends black widow quite often since it breaks frequently giving them more business. Anyway Black Magic was rated 5th out of all strings rated by Stringers Association and the only poly rated in the top ten.

You can ignore this comment, but why not just buy the string packs on your own. Then give them to the shop to string up? That's what I would do to compare strings' playability, etc.

Please note that thinner gauges will play softer than thicker ones at the same reference tension, so you should perhaps buy the same nominal gauges when trialing.

I would say, out of the 4 you listed, Timo is the stiffest.

Black Widow would be the softest. I use it all the time, it's great.

I agree that BW 16 feels soft but the 17g feels harsh to me. Black Magic also feels soft to me. Timo and Ace both feel very stiff. Thanks for your input.

Maybe TiMo and Ace are comparable in very thin gauges, but if you compared them all at the same gauge TiMo and Ace are going to be considerably stiffer. All of the big banger strings are super stiff.

They are probably talking about RSI stiffness ratings. If I recall correctly, Black Magic has a really high rating. It plays about as soft as Black Widow to me, at least in a hybrid. I have not tried the other strings you mentioned.
