Help! Need footwork/exercise drills.

    I am looking for things I can do to improve my footwork. I currently do the following things:

    Hit against backboard 2-3 times a week.
    Racquetball 2 times a week.
    Weight lift 2-3 times a week.

    I usually ride my road bike indoors or outdoors depending on weather. I know this is helping my cardio, but I was wondering if there are things you guys/gals do that are cardio workouts but greatly increase your footwork.

    So any drills you do or have heard of that are good for footwork.
    Looking for drills you can do outdoors at tennis court or indoors if weather is bad.

    Also, can someone confirm what I think is FOOTWORK? To me, footwork is the proper mechanics of your feet and legs to get in the proper position to hit the ball correctly before the ball arrives. Is that what you would call FOOTWORK?

    Skipping rope,running ladders,and cone work helps. Do some searches here on split steps,bounce-hit-bounce-hit. Keys to "good footwork" has alot to do with anticipation, reaction and transition.

    Bingo. Folks, sometimes people make this thing way to complicated. Sure have a nice workout program to get stronger and more flexible.

    Then....go play TENNIS. Go practice TENNIS. Run for balls wide, run for balls deep, run for balls short. Try to reach every ball and hit it back in bounds with some pace. Keep it simple.

    Sometimes you can analyze and work on footwork so much instead of playing lots of actual tennis that it hurts your....wait for it...footwork.

    Just go out there, remember to split step, and bust it for every ball.

    I play tennis

    If my family heard you ask this they would absolutely laugh. I play tennis like between 2-3 times a week when it is above freezing. I finished the year the #1 player in 4.0 singles and 4.0 doubles many times in the state of Oklahoma. My team just went to Nationals and I played #1 doubles for my team, so yeah I play a lot of tennis.

    To me, the way to get better is to pick out weaknesses in your game and work on those things in the offseason (winter). I have 2 or 3 things I am currently working on, but also wanted something that improves footwork WHILE doing cardio.

    Well done. I like when people design, create and explain things that are easy to understand. I loathe designs and products (any kind) that are convoluted, unintuitive or inefficient.

    +1 on the rope skipping. Other plyometric leg exercises can also be beneficial.

    That's part of it. Footwork & balance during and after (recovery) the ball is hit is also part of it. Ready steps and split-steps in preparation to move to the ball should also be included. For more insights into various footwork patterns, take a gander at the following:
