On BBC Radio 4 this morning, on the subject of grunting, someone tweeted: "blind people would think Wimbledon was a porn film!"

As our American cousins would say: EPIC!

The grunting girls of Wimbledon are raising the ire of tournament officials as their groans and growls distract opponents and annoy spectators.
Visitors to the prestigious All England Lawn and Tennis Club (AELTC) this week could be forgiven for thinking they are strolling past animal enclosures at a zoo as the wails of players neared record levels.
On Monday Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, a player often criticised for her wails, edged towards record noise levels as she made her debut on court No.2, Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper reported.
Noise machines recorded her reach a level of 95 decibels as she shrieked her way through the first round match against Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova.
The grunts, which typically exceeded 1.5 seconds almost every time she hit the ball, drew amusement from some spectators and annoyance from others before play was suspended due to rain.
Chief executive of the AELTC Ian Ritchie admitted that he receives numerous letters of complaint from the public about noisy players and that officials would ``prefer to see less grunting''.
``The players have an ability to complain about it, if one player is grunting too much and the other player doesn't like it and it is distracting, they can complain to the umpire,'' he told the Telegraph.
``We have discussed it with the tours and we believe it is helpful to reduce the amount of grunting.
``We are one tournament in a global circuit. But we have made our views clear and we would like to see less of it.''
During Australian Jelena Dokic's centre court loss to Italy's Francesca Schiavone on Monday, the latter developed a double grunt on serve; one as she threw the ball and a second as she made contact with her racquet.
The loudest known grunt came from Maria Sharapova, who sent the sound monitor into new realms with a recording of 105decibels in
    2009.

If anyone thinks Azarenka is bad they should hear Michelle Larcher de Brito. Now that is scary!

It's good to see the British spectators complaining about the screams and the All England club responding to their complaints. I hope the club goes further to curb the practice.

It's a blight on the sport and a real turn-off to fans and would-be fans.

All grunting should be banned. Anyone can learn to exhale without making animal mating sounds.

The case is simple. Loud girls = less spectators = even less income from the WTA compared to ATP ===> solution ===> threaten to decrease the prize money and I'm sure they will stop grunting. If it doesn't help decrase it even more untill they get nothing.

Anyway, finally someone noticed the problem!

What problem? Speaks volumes about the mental midgidity of female players that they would get distracted by a freaking GRUNT by their opponent!! No matter how loud it is, they should zone it out and deliver a beat-down - that is the best response.

That's not the point. Tons of players take a medical-time out to distract their opponents, yet no spectator cares about it. It's more about the viewers than the players.

Sharapova sounds like she is getting stabbed every time she hits a ball.

No need for afrodisiac foods these days - listen to the Tennis Channel  ...

I find it annoying too. Plus - enforce the 20 seconds rule between points, please.

^ Yep, the 20-second rule is more important.

i hate when they do that high pitch screech when they mess up or something. also, there is no need to screem on a volley...

That is the exact reason I see their yelling as a tool to distract the other player. You don't need to shriek at the top of your lung on a volley. I really wish someone would tell them to shut up.
