I was in a tournament and was just getting some practice in with a buddy. I saw this guy watching us and turns out it's Jean Claude Augustin, former Davis Cup player for Haiti. He later asked the tournament organizer to hit with me and so we got in about 10 minutes on a free court. His shots were really precise and deep in the corners.

He won the tournament easily beating really solid players and humiliating some guys with big egos  I didn't get to play him but will probably see him again soon at another tournament.

He's a smart player. If he sees his opponent likes to hit hard, he gives him low shots with no pace. He smiles a lot and is in cruise mode most of the time. One guy he faced in the tournament started to cheat like he usually does and that got Jean Claude serious. That cheater didn't touch another ball after that.

Great story! Aren't those guys great? I also had the honor to hit against a former Davis Cup Player. We actually played a match and the only reason the score was close was because he allowed it. He was in his 70's at the time and couldn't move very well but sure took me to school. Mr. Rodriquez played Davis Cup for Panama, but had since moved to Southern California. For awhile, he was the woman's coach at Pasadena City College. Don't think PCC has a tennis program these days. It was a great match and he made me feel good about it. Like I really had a chance to win, even though I realistically didn't.

A few years ago, something similar happened while playing a friendly soccer match with some buddies. This guy was watching, he was probably in his 30's, and asked to play. Everyone took a look at him and he wasn't really tall or athletic so no one wanted him on their team. Anyhow he started to play and the guy was amazing. Turns out he used to play for some small countries national team.

Not really tennis but this reminds me of a school sports day in 1975. Every year they held a mums' race over 80m. One new mum entered and won it by 50m. After the race the headmaster said "Mrs Green - have you done some serious running before?" She replied "Yes, I came 5th in the 400m semi finals in the Mexico Olympics".

Next year they gave the others 50m head start and she won again - easily.
