I just stumbled upon a closed thread on cheating in junior tennis and just about all of the thoughts posted by tennis5 really resonated with me. My boys just turned 8 and 6, and though they love tennis and only recently started with tournament play, I feel sick inside when I see the same few bad apples show up at tournaments and blatantly cheat and bully their way to wins. Of course every parent wants to see their children win and develop confidence, but I would think that first and foremost, the goal is to play the right way, which includes being fair and respectful to all. When I see some parents clearly condone and even encourage obvious cheating and even bullying to win, I question whether it's true that learning to navigate through junior tennis really makes the good kids stronger. This is what I hear, that it's all worth it in the end, but I have to wonder how many kids and parents out there disagree and feel that it was not all worth it in the end, that life would have been better by skipping junior tennis and just enjoying the sport with friends and family. So, being two or three years later (from the time that closed thread was started), I'm hoping to know what tennis5 and others have experienced and decided since? Thank you.
