I am thinking I need to get a saw from the Lowes. Any recommendations? Tools and methods?

Choke up, and put a rubber band at the bottom of your hand first.
    On the racquet of course.
Practice for a while (couple months, 60 hours).
    Than make decision.

Remove buttcap. Measure the 1/2" you want to remove. Wrap some kind of tape at that line to guide your cut, so that the tape is "above" the 1/2" mark. Secure the handle in a bench vise. Use a hacksaw to cut off the end of the handle. Put the buttcap back on. Secure it with new staples, tightly wrapped clear packing tape, two-part epoxy glue or Gorilla (polyurethane, same as what the handle foam is made of) Glue.
