My friend's college team will play 10 teams this season but only 3 of those teams are in his conference. How exactly does the college season work? Why so few matches against those teams in his conference? Is this the way it usually works?

    Sounds unusual. What team?

That is very unusual. The norm is for each team in the conference to play every other team in the conference during the regular season.

Certain conferences are spread out throughout the country and schools don't have it in their budget to play each team. What the conference may require is that each team play a certain number of schools in their conference and that all the schools will play a conference tournament at one site at the end of the season to determine who wins the conference title and advances to nationals.

Many conferences have too many teams to play without giving up the traditional "Spring Break" trip or out-of-conference matches. When I played at college in the mid to late 90s, a few conference schools didn't have men's teams, & our team was so god awful that I'm sure our schedule was tweaked to play lesser competition (even lower Division levels) that we still couldn't beat. I noticed this year, my alma mater only plays 2 conference teams in its spring season & a few D2 schools.
