Well, The new Spartacus does about as well as anyone possibly can. I don't think a better replacement exists. Season 2 started off slow but the episode where they brought down the arena until the finale was really great stuff. Im watching Blood and Sand with a friend im getting into the series, and im definitely in awe at how amazing Andy is as Spartacus. He's BRILLIANT and can't be replaced. But the show is amazing still and as long as things stay on par with season 2 im all for it.

Yeah, Whitfield was absolutely incredible in his role.

The next season starts in January, just got announced by Starz that it will be the last season. Spartacus: War of the Damned

I just watched "Gods of the Arena," again. Great stuff. No spartacus in that prequel season and it was really good. We all know Spartacus, Crixis and everyone died in the war but I wonder if there could be another season. Gannicus was a made up character. maybe he lives.

For me, the first season of Spartacus will be a standalone event in modern television. The second season was barely passable, worth a view only because of it's connections to the first season in name and plot. In regards to quality, there is no comparison.

For all of you Walking Dead naysayers, the third season promises to be epic. Not that everything in the show has matched the comic book page for page, but the Governor and the prison have both been confirmed. Trust me, some nasty stuff is about to go down.

Anyone still keeping up with the show? How good was Bennett last night? He absolutely stole the show. That shot where he was looking into Newvia's eyes towards the end was great.

Manu Bennett was just incredible yesterday. His last has to be his best performance during that series.
He definately stole the show, the guy certainly got some badass acting skills, hope to see more from him in the future.

Still really sad to see the story progress another 2 episodes without him.

LOL at Ceasar getting it up his butt by that little brat. Definately didn't see that one coming.

It is going to be weird not having Bennett around for the finale. He's been in every episode so far, hasn't he? There was always an overwhelming feeling of dread around the Spartacus camp in last night's episode, I thought that was very well done.

Caesar has grown on me. I didn't like him the first few episodes but the actor has done a decent job with the character. That scene with Tiberius was the biggest surprise of the season thus far, lol

Can't wait till the finale, judging by how each season finale has gone, we are in for a hell of a ride.

It has been awesome this year. Hate to see Crixis gone especially since he was killed by that ****** Tiberius. Agron too. Jeez he didn't get such a dramatic send off . Only two more shows left. Everyone will be dead soon. I'm going to miss this.

Guess you learn something new every day.

When I opened this thread, I expected to read about the Stanley Kubrick/Kirk Douglas film from 1960.

I had no idea there was a series on with the same name these days.

And, Lucy Lawless was in it? I saw her recently in Parks and Recs and thought "hey, isn't that Zena, the Warrior Princess?"

I think Tiberuis' time is done next episode. Shame we don't get a new one next week, but it's understandable.

I like the blood, gore and sex as much as anyone else, but this show is much more than that. The plot is actually very good and the characters get developed nicely.

The first series is a different class. An excellent performance from John Hannah and some others. What has followed has sometimes been terrible -- the prequel -- but more often just tawdry.

Wow - you should hit Netflix or buy the first few seasons.........get caught up!!!!

NOTE many and I mean many of the sex scenes are close to x-rated........this blows away the Kirk Douglas / Lawrence Olivier version......none of this "hinted" homosexuality stuff this show goes right into EVERYTHING.......for sure NOT for PG13, PG or G crowd.

Plus Lucy Lawless au naturel!!!!! Worth watching right there!

What's early cool is the show actually stays close to actual historic characters and what happened to them.......Crixis, Gannicus, Crassus, Julius Ceaser all follow pretty close in this show what happened to them and the actual interaction during the 3rd Servile War (which this show does follow).

Only thing is Crassus did not have a son named Tiberius????? That said I kinda hope he becomes fodder for Sparticus in the end........interesting how they will end it.........the true history of Sparticus does not have he same ending as in the Kubrick Film???? I can't believe the show makers have the guts to change the ending????

Yes, even the Glabber/Spartacus war at the end of Vengeance was pretty close to historical accounts.

I love this show so much. MANU has been so amazing this season and really makes you love his character's passion. The long fight scene at the beginning was brilliant, as was Spartacus's sex scene, tiberius/Caesar and Crixis's final speech.

Yes, with you there, S. I think the people behind this got it spot on. The immersion into Roman history if sketchy is still fascinating (I've been almost obsessively compulsive in past years re reading up on the history of Ancient Rome), and the stylised fighting and shall we say steamier aspects (not talking about the 99s here either :) ) undoubtedly works really well. I want to see the rest of the series now, though not sure if it's been on already and I've missed it, or if it will be on in the future here in UK.

I don't recall there being too many details about the slave revolt from my roman history class but I'm enjoying this explanations. The history may have been written some time after, who knows how accurate it is. Too bad no one in the revolt wrote about it. History is written by the victors,as they say. It's got all of the major players but I thought Gannicus was fictional. Plus we know all of the slaves were slaughtered in the end but Sparticus was never positively identified . Maybe the writers have them slip away and live happily ever after? Lol

The Romans kept excellent records.........names, places....etc. Gannicus was a Celt per what was written. Looking at the names and places - the 3rd Servile War from 73 - 71BC is very very well documented and accounts were written about it by various historical writers at the time. You have to remember that 8 or 9 roman legions were involved and in the end close to 130,000 plus slaves........

No surprise you didn't learn about it in history class..........

It was a good college class but they have to cover the entirety of roman history from Romulus and Remus and the kings, to the Holy Roman Empire in one semester, really could have made Roman history a major itself. They definitely glossed over the the Serville Wars in about 20 minutes. I'm not a history major and don't have that many details. Was just going off of memory. I wondered if the arrogance and political ambitions of the Roman leaders could influence the historical account. maybe not. One thing though...I thought i remembered Pompi showing up and stealing the glory from Crassus.

I've actually read a couple of books on Spartacus and the historic records are not all that well kept. There are a lot of conflicting reports about certain battles/events (such as why Spartacus and Crixus split ways or why Spartacus decided to go back to southern Italy after having reached the Alps). This all leads to a lot of speculation from modern historians to recreate the events. Though for the more important moments in the war (Crixus' death, Glabers fall, etc.) these are more detailed. There were accounts written by historians at the time, but what remains of them is not very detailed.

Considering it was over 2100 yrs ago and what happened to Rome and Europe during the Dark Ages et all.......it pretty damn good you have names, dates, 3 to 4 major historians at the time getting what seems to be excellent facts.

What I'm dying to see is how they end it........we all know you didn't get a happy Walt Disney ending for most of the salves that were caught. The fact that Sparticus was to have died in battle BUT no mention of what they did with him after? For someone who put so much fear into Rome and forced the senate to beg and allow someone like Crassus (who might be considered the richest man who ever lived) to take over its strange the body was "lost". At minimum they would have stuck him or his head up in plain sight (like in the Kubrick movie) as an example - Romans loved examples.

Does this show have the cajones to allow Sparticus to escape in the end? Run off to the mountains in Gaul? Go back to his supposed homeland in Thrace with a new love?

    Only one episode left!

Yes, but it's a shame that what survives is not more. The fact that some of the historians write conflicting stuff about some of the stuff that happened is also a shame. But yeah, at least we can reconstruct the overall more important events that occurred and get a sense for what transpired.

Actually two episodes left! I was thinking about how it would end too, it really is an open book and they can do what they want with it. Perhaps they will have Spartacus go down on the field of battle only to have Gannicus rescue his body, give him a burial and escape with Sybil. I just feel that Sybil will make Gannicus not want to be fighting for the remainder of his life and perhaps inspire him to escape. He was never fully into the idea of the war, as he let Spartacus know many times in Vengeance.

Per the official record Gannicus died after getting split off from the main force from Sparticus.......he and another group along with Castus were run down by Crassus after the negotiations fell apart. Group of like 15,000 slaves were lost that day -

Cool I didn't realize it was two shows left - not sure which of the new crop of shows is more bat-a** crazy? Banshee, Strike Back, The Vikings (not gory at all - but the early life of Ragnar Lodbrok fun - comparing this show the again another Kirk Douglas / Tony Curtis period flick "The Vikings" which covers the EXACT same folks just younger)

I just have a feeling they will have somebody survive, and my bet is on Gannicus. Sybil just opened the door for that possibility in my opinion.

Agrons death wasn't that graphic, maybe he isn't dead, comes back and kills Tiberius. That would be pretty sweet. Gannicus riding off with sibyl would be my bet though too. Saxa is too badarse to die, maybe she makes it.

I don't know if I want Spartacus to survive or not. I do in a way, but too many people will complain, plus I can't see him being happy while everyone else is dead.

Agron lives!!! That was cool. Glad that delta-bravo Tiberius is dead. Not a fan of the episode's ending either. At least should have been nuvia. I thought all the captured Romans were made to fight each other but that's ok, it was entertaining.

Fun to see the crazy crowds in Friday's episode. I've missed those scenes the last couple of seasons.

One episode left. I say either Gannicus and Sybil live or Agron and Nasir live.

The finale will be bittersweet for me. I'm so upset it's the last episode I'll be able to watch new, and wonder what twists and turns it will take. Spartacus's trap of Tiberius with Caeser's help was genius.

Well, that's it, it's over. What an awesome show. Not the end I expected either. Crassus , arrogant even after being beaten by Spartacus. Didn't see the gannicus part coming. Friggen Romans suck. Sad it's over, I was really pulling for the slaves.

At least Crassus did not have the satifaction of killing or crucifying Spartacus.
He knew Spartacus was THE MAN who had him dead until he was stabbed in the back. I AM SPARTACUS

    That was truly insane.

Watched it with a bunch of old college buddies of mine and we were going wild like it was a football game during that final battle.

^^^PSNELKE, why did you not like Agron? I actually thought the way they handled the Nasir/Agron saga was one of the highlights of the last few seasons. It was refreshing to me to see a gay couple that is not being completely forced down our throat like channels such as MTV do. Though that one sex scene was a bit much, but pretty much everyone at the show had sex at some point.

Yeah Agron was cool. I like the way they portrayed them as 2 badass guys that can fight, and hold their own, but just happen to be gay. That's much closer to reality than them being feminine and over the top.

"There's no greater victory than falling from this world a free man"... I thought the ending was great. Sparacus was never meant to win. He was meant to sacrifice, bleed and fight bloody hell for a rightful cause and dying with the satisfaction of having giving it all out there.

It's definately Season 1 for me.
Andy Whitfield was just brilliant as Spartacus. Great cast.
John Hannah was absolutely great as well.
Crixus was bad arse there, from season 2 on he was like a ancient henpecked husband. Still his performance in the last episode he played in, was out of this world.

Can't really say which episode I like the most, I simply enoyed all of them.

I really liked both the first and last seasons. As far as favorite episodes there's a few: season 1 finale, Crixus' death episode, and the finale itself. In general Spartacus season finales were insane.

Have to watch this series again, been a few years since I've seen the first season.

What's insane is how much Gannicus looks like Agassi! :)

My favorite scene is from Blood and Sand when Spartacus kills all of Glaber's men with a wooden sword, first one then two, then eventually all of them left attacking him at once, and when he finishes them all off he returns his gaze to a stunned Glaber as if to say "Next?"

    Classic.
