I am starting to play tennis and the real reason I want to play is for competition so how long will it be before I can play tournaments?

You are allowed to enter a tournament no matter when you started playing tennis.

Whether your skill level means that you are ready to enter a tournament, nobody on an online forum can tell you.

Some questions you might consider are:
    How old are you?
Do you know the basic rules of tennis?
Can you sustain a short rally?
Can you get most of your serves in?
Is there a novice tournament nearby that you can enter for your first tournament? (Novice level tournaments have different number designations in different states; in my state, novice tournaments are level 5).

I know a junior player who entered his first tournament two weeks after he first picked up a racquet. He won the tournament--but this kid has an incredible natural talent.

    Good luck to you!

I think that you need to start playing tournaments right away but do it for the learning experience (i.e., don't focus too much on results). after each match, try to analyze what went well and what didn't and then train accordingly.

Depends who you want to be playing against. I have a unique opportunity this year to be playing U18 and Men's 5.0 and Men's Open. It's a nice season in that I am able to compete in some very high level tennis year round for tournaments. If I wasn't confident in my skill, I would be playing only U18.

Message your state/province coordinate. I've gotten somewhat chummy with mine and she helped me out a TON in getting back into the swing of things, and helping me register in all the stuff I needed. There are always people able/willing to help you if you are willing to spend a bit of time getting to know them!
