Well, papa you are right on but you won't convince these young guys though.

A properly designed practice session is well planned to work on specific items, very intense, portions of it spent right on the edge of current skill level, and is not nearly as long as 99% of players hit.

There is a new book called The Talent Code that compiles decades of research showing how "deep practice" is how the greats get great, and it is very intense and amazingly short. The great coaches such as John Wooden and the lady who developes all the Russian kids subscribe to the theory.

Like you say, cardio and weights provide the stamina and strength, the intense practice the skills improvement, the match play the experience.. You can not "deep practice" for 4 hours per day.

But unfortunately most players waste enormous amounts of time and energy hitting waaaaay more than they should and getting diminishing returns for their efforts.

Well really all I can say is that it worked/works for me. Went from 70 to top 15 in SoCal and 600 to 120s in the nation in 8 months from upping my playing time and spending lots and lots of time on court playing.

this schedule is based on you playing and training full time, (year round)
i know that you young guys are crazy about tennis. this schedule is to slowly/safely improve your game (long haul) but dont overdue it because once you get injured/over use injury, you'll be out of tennis for weeks and months, meaning you will miss important tournaments, school matches, etc.
this happened to my daughter, she missed 3 months due to injury, lost alot of ranking points (missed winter nat'l, couple level 3 nat'l) but most of all, her game could not improve during that time

  24. When i started playing at age 7 i played with my friend 2-3 times a week, when i was 10 i strted practicing (according to my dad) 10-12 hours a week all the way up to i was 15, then i practiced 16-18 hours a week + physical training and light weights in the gym, from 21-25 when i played professionally a week without tournaments i practiced smarter i think and with more quality, id say around 10-14 hours a week. Nowadays, 3 hours a week. The feeling you get from smacking that ball is just irreplacable!

If you guys could think of the perfect schedule for a junior that's looking to improve immensly what would you guys have that junior do?

    #27
  28. I see, where did she injure herself? Did you talk to her coach about it? a 17 year old girl should not have to be injured unless shes been on a crazy scheduele?

    #28
  29. I make a living of doing schedueles to tennis-players (also teach on court)
Im sure i could come up with a fairly good scheduele

    #31
  32. I guess i could do that, sure. What kind of scheduele do u want, is it for ONE specific person? how old is he/she? what level is he/she? How much is he/she practicing as of now? Doing these kind of things is extremely individual, a great scheduele might do wonders for one person and for another its totally garbage.

  35. Just one question, 15 years old and 3-5 hours a day?? How much of that time is GREAT quality training and how much is "could have been much better"-training?

Well usually 1-2 hours of that is playing sets or matches with friends. Don't be fooled by the word friends though we play pretty serious.
The other 1-3 hours is just hitting.

    #37
  38. "just hitting"? Ok, ill make you a scheduele, i just wanna point out that the match-play should always be the last thing during a practice-session. Im sure they do it that way.

Yea we hit then play a match or a set. If there is something we to work on we'll spend time on that to.

    Well built
    6'0-6'1/2
    Weaknesses is BackHands and Volleys.
    Strengths Serves and Forehands.
I am guessing for the last question your asking physically and mentally on court?

    If so
In shape but could get better at it and mentally thinks he chokes alot when he's up 40-0 or 40-15 thinks he's still going to choke.

been out since end of april with some back issues. i had 3 epidurals(no im not pregnant before anyone asks, there coridzon/steriod for inflamation) though and I started back this week all out. I was homeschooled in MS and I played 3-4 hours a day.
In HS I play 1 or 2 Singles or 1 dubs. Looks like this year I'll be playing 1 Singles if I'm healthy.
