I have tried the Luxilon Alu power rough in a full bed and I loved the spin potential, power and control it offered me. However I found it too be a little harsh on my arm. So i am looking to hybrid Luxilon alu rough with a soft feeling multi or synthetic gut in teh croses. Can anyone suggest me a comfortable cross string that is also durable?

VS gut is the best you can try global gut if you need something cheaper

Wouldn't the lux rough rip through the x-1 in like 10 minutes ?

kevlar on mains alu rough crosses.

joking aside the alu/x1 is a great hybrid but its true that the hybrid wont last.

right now i strung my k90 with alurought/ tf syn gut and so far so good.
im gonna try alu rought/nxts or kgut next

I agree with everyone else, don't use X-1 in the crosses if you want it to last. I had pretty bad fraying around 4 hours and cut it out after 6 because it was about to snap.

I actually switched it around and used the X-1 in the mains and the rough in the crosses yesterday. I played for about 3 hours and really like it over the traditional hybrid method. I guess we'll see how durability is, but it looked better already. Funny because I never have used polys as crosses before.

    Durability

In terms of durability is x-1 more durablethan gut or is it the other way around. I hear many poeple saying gut is more durable but i am not sure.

I have used x-1 in crosses in various hybrids and found it to fray way too fast and break pretty quickly. In my current setup with black code in the mains and x-1 in the crosses has the same problem. The x-1 starts to fray even with string savers. Is there a multi that has the same feel as x-1 (love the feel and comfort x-1 gives me) but is more durable

Is wilson [k] gut more durable than x-1 as a cross? I have tried [k] gut in a full bed and liked the feel and comfort it offered me. I was considering it as a cross for the alu power rough hybrid. Can someone compare alu power ough/x-1 to alu power rough/[k] gut

it depends on what ur hybriding x-1 with. if its with a soft non textured string, i.e. SPPP, and is in the crosses, it will last longer than gut. if its in the mains it should be about the same. if its with a textured string in the mains or crosses it will be equal or inferior to gut, atleast from my times with it. X-1 is the best multi, and if its breaking to fast, try it with a different hybrid in the crosses, or go to a cheap gut.

lux alu and kgut will be a good hybrid, with the durability only slightly better than lux alu with x-1. with that in mind, lux alu and x-1 is one of the top hybrid combos, and is even better with x-1 in the mains, although that will have 3-4hr durabilty.

I used Gamma Asterisk Spin on the Mains with BB ALU Rough on the crosses. I felt like I got tremendous spin, however I also got tremendous tennis elbow!

If you want good spin, give Asterisk Spin a try.

I use Wilson sensation 16g. It is a great string and works fine with the ALU rough.

Does gut last longer in the crosses or the mains if i am hybriding with alu power rough. What about the x-1. Is there a better string than alu power rough to hybrid with gut or x-1?

I am also considering hybriding x-1 with lux bb ace, would the x-1/lux bb ace last longer than x-1/alu power rough

Would gut/lux bb ace last longer than gut/alu power rough?

gut lasts longer in the crosses. for a hybrid with x-1 check out my thread. that has everything good with it. but to summarize, kirsch pl2, sppp, msv hex and rough all work great

    Dunlop

Has anyone tried dunlop max comfort? According to string forum its on of the most durable multis and it has a great overall rating.

I am goign to try x-1 soon and then try gut. I am very reluctant to try gut due to its price.

You guys know some cheaper gut other than global gut? Has anyone tried unifibre gut?

i have not tried unifibre, but klip armor pro is 32 bucks, which is not horrible + its very durable and is one of the most durable guts. ill tell you how x-1 goes today, it seems to be a very nice string.

    Ding, ding, ding.

Durability is just OK (use the 16 gauge), but the ALU will lose tension before the Gosen OG Micro snaps.

Can someone compare the durability of Gosen og sheep to x-1 as a cross string? If i am going with a multi cross i want to make sure i get a string with decent durability, since the alu rough will shred the cross string

well on thursday i will have alu rough in the mains and x-1 in the crosses. ill write about how it went on this thread. as to durability, i would say gosen will last longer, but if you dont crush the ball with spin every time x-1 would be a better choice

So its decided that x-1 is the best cross string in a hybrid besides natural gut.
Is there any string that has the best price/performance ratio

I have recently used cyber flash 17 as crosses for my BB alu rough mains. BB is at 55, while the cyberflash 17 is at 57.

The full BB is too stiff and doesnt have any sensation. the comfort and durability of the cyber flash complimented the character of the BB. I chose cyber flash based on the string survey I saw on the internet that was second (only the 17gauge) in comfort, control, and durability. The last factor was price ($75 from TW).

Im amazed that BB at my mains breaks first but not my cyber flash crosses (since its 17gauge).

    good luck!

X1 is probably the best next to VS gut...
    Other option for cross:
    NRG2
    Maxim Touch
    Xcel Premium... etc.

Ok so I realize for this Luxilon string that it goes dead in a few hours of play, I just bought a stringer and now don't mind restringing because its almost 2 jobs for the price of taking it somewhere. (generally places around here charge 15-20 for labor) So as far as a cross goes is gut even worth it. I realize NRG2 will break faster than gut generally but by the time it breaks won't the Luxilon be dead?

I really want to try using BB Alu Power / Babolat VS but that would be $50 to string for a tournement (2 frames) compared to only about $30 with NRG or X-1 or something similar.

To answer you first question gut is probably not worth stringing wil lux alu rough as a cross, if the gut was in the main and alu rough in the crosses there would be some playability (little) even after the alu rough goes dead.

Second question: the alu rough will go dead before the nrg2 will break.

Thanks for the quick reply, I may try gut if I'm playing some tourneys but ALU/NRG2 looks like a great combo. X1 just seems a little pricy for little reward.

yeah thats very true, but i think its worth the $$ for x-1. i have played with both many times, and although when compared to each other x-1 is just a tad better, when compared to gut x-1 is the clear winner.

Even though I like to use X-1 or nat gut, I also enjoyed to use Gamma Professional 16 in the crosses. It was dirt cheap compared to X-1 and performed still very well in hybrid.

More what? More expensive? It might cost the same on TW, but I used to get a 10set pack of Gamma Pro for 80-90$ from "yabe" :) But if you can afford X-1, stay with X-1.

I am not a string breaker. I play 2-3 times a week and I hit the balls pretty hard, but I usually cut my strings out before they break (once a month = after 12-14 hours of play). I can't remember Gamma Pro breaking in my crosses.

Pro Supex spiral flex is one of the best cross strings to use with poly,
using Alu rough, I wouldn't worry too much about durability, the Alu will be dead by the time you break the cross anyways.

Pro supex spiral flex you say? Hows the feel on this string? Can you compare it to x-1, if its even close to x-1 i might try it.

i have tried spiral, and although i liked it, x-1 beats it in everything besides durability.
