Yeah classic stuff. But at that angle you can really see how hard and flat he hits his backhand. That shot is just scary.

    It's not the only reason.

Safin really got everyone's attention at the 2000 US Open and that was a big part of people cheering for him.

We saw the talent and the potential.

He's extremely good looking, charismatic, says memorable things, and is a mercurial tennis plater who managed to win 2 Slams, most guys want to be like him only they won't admit it. And girls love the bad boy aspect of him.

That's why people all over the world love him.

I was never a fan of Safin nor have I ever been a fan of his sister.

Then don't bother to watch this.

But real Safin fans can bring out their tissues and watch this Sarah Brightman slideshow Safin trubute on the Chinese language verson of the China Open site...

Safin's the biggest whiner on the ATP tour. He choked that match vs Berdych by being the headcase he's been his entire career. Don't blame Berdych b/c you couldn't beat a guy on one leg after winning the 1st set.

What a great, informative thread! I am glad that JBF has provided us with these great videos as an entertainment before AO.

If I couldn't be myself, I wouldn't mind being Safin. On the surface, not the most disciplined character out there, but that is a lot like myself. I tend to work harder than people give me credit for. I'm not the kind of person that buys into the idea that the best players have to be high and mighty with a condescending manner. So, I would much rather be a Safin, Bode Miller, Kuerten, or Dimas, over Sampras, Woods, or Herman Maier. I know who looks happier.

I'll paraphrase Jon Wertheim in saying that if I could "underachieve" like Safin, I'd be ok with that.
