I will never forget 5 years ago when we were flying back from Orlando when Dement-Eva and her mother was 3 rows behind us on an empty flight. She had been to the semi-final of the US Open the summer before so I asked my 11 year old son to ask her for her autograph. She told him in her heavy russian accent, "I am not Elana, I am not her!" Rather than simply signing for a young fan, that was her way of refusing. We saw her 5'11' frame at the luggage carousal in her Nike sneakers picking up her NIke duffle bag and I asked her for her autograph and she refused and said again, "I'm not her!" I was a fan of hers but ever since, I have NOT been a fan of hers. I think her serve has deteriorated since then.

    That's too bad.
They make their living on us.
What's the point of being a professional player if she (he) doesn't appreciate her (his) fan? Maybe she is not a happy human being. Pity...

    Didn't she just beat Venus?

As for autographs, I don't bother. I have the same attitude many 'celebrities' have: Autographs hounds are wacky. ;)

I guess it's Roddick who said something like this: " It doesn't matter if you have signed a thousand autographs today, there always be another thousand that will hate you..."

Does she owe you something to do everything you want?
And instead of sending your daughter for the autograph, you should have taught her to respect other people' private life.

You make it sound like her serve has deteriorated BECAUSE she refused you and your kid an autograph. Those arrogant pros should learn that, man, you just don't want to pi*s-off the Edge or you too will suffer a similar fate-a diminished serve.

Shame on you, making your child do your evil, celebrity-bothering bidding.

 Besides being a drop dead bombshell - she is one of the nicer girls on tour. Can you imagine all those turned down POSTING ON THIS SITE!!!! What a loser............everytime your mug is in public your obligated to scribble your name for a complete stranger who has no regard for your space or privacy then that seeker tries to hawk it off on **** or someother 2 bit autograph trading site? I hope you don't dwell on the small things in life - misery = only path to follow.

She is great to look at and she has been playing well. But, I got a sense as to what she might be like when she was asked by Cliff Drysdale about her serve after her win over Venus. She could have just laughed it off or just say that her serve was off, but she said that she didn't like the question. That, of course, is a legitimate answer, but to me, it didn't show her personality in good light, because she could handled it very differently, if she was a nice person.

 You obviously don't know her background. She just came off one of her top 10 wins and Cliff ******** has to ask about her 61 mph serve!!! She is constantly hounded by the question - why? She's not going to change. Hey you just won a playoff game - whats' wrong w/ or why didn't that work or why is that weak? Jeeess when I win I feel warmth and remember why I won. Cliff realized his error and did the right thing which is why he is still around, Elena = finalist @ a sub-major why would she change her serve - alot of Russians are happy to get a pay check and they appreciate alot more than those who say - what do I have do for endorsements etc.

What is wrong with you naysayers? I personally think that the pro athlete has a responsibility to their young fans. Even if she did not want to sign, a la Bill russell, at least she should not have LIED to a child denying who she is. At least Russell would shake your hand and explained that he doesn't give autographs...but LYING? It's about kids, they like heroes and it would be nice not t o deny innocent children.

I agree with Edge, she should not have done it in such a trashy way. Kids deserve better than that. I laughed about the serve deterioration thing too, but I think edge just threw that in as an aside.

I just don't agree all pro atheltes have responsibility to sign autograph. We are asking too much from those not-yet-adult atheletes. The only difference between them and some other normal 18 years old is some are more talented in doing one particular thing (in this case, tennis) while the others aren't. They are not, and they are not SUPPOSED to be, super human being like people want to make them to be.

No, she should not have any responsibility of that kind. It's not good to lie to a kid. But it's all your fault as a parent. You should have tell your kid that there are times when you have a right to ask an autograph ( after a match, at a press conf. I mean, when a person is a player) and there are times when you don't have this right ( when the person is just a person). Why didn't you make an ambush in the plane bathroom and didn't let her in until she gave you that da...ned autograph?!
Have you ever been a celebrity of any kind? I have. It's a complete nightmare. You do not belong to yourself anymore. The fact that you are a best student (my case) somehow makes people think that you owe them something. You must not be sick, sad, tired, ... never. You must be nice to anyone, anyplace, anytime. You must explain every stranger in a language, from which you may know a dozen of words, that it's just impolite to intrude into your private life and that you have a right to talk to your mother instead of ... You got the point.

And she has the right to not like any question. Because you can ask one question with different intonations and face expressions. And many of them can be considered insulting... plus in a foriegn language...

I never was her fan, but when I hear people like Edge, I don't know, my fists are clenching by their own will.

    Sorry..

Wasn't she force out of Roland Garros one year because her brother had beaten her so badly that her ribs were broken. Odd thing to happend to a nice girl.

Wasn't she also the girl who fanned Anit-Williams fires in Indian Wells by saying that Richard fixed their matches. Seemed very insensitive comsidering the atmosphere.

WRT Sexy. If you consider Tanya Harding thighs, and wicked witch nose sexy, you may be right.

I find her ugly inside, out, and on the tennis court.

Outstanding post-pretty much sums-up how I feel. The kind of stuff that Edge did, borders on harassment, regardless of whether or not the person is a celebrity. Let them be human for once in a while and don't ascribe to them things that most of them are not able to be i.e. "heros". They play tennis for a living and most of them are none too smart or heroic-it's usually the FANS and the media who try to burden them with the mantle of "hero", "villain", ect. Most are not up to the task. Edge, simply put, you exploited your kid for your selfish aims.

Phil and C_u, I didn't explot my kid! I couldn't give 2 friggen' cents for her friggen' autograph. Don't you dorks understand? My son wanted her autograph because he saw her play well at the Open. Kids are like that. When you are a famous you have to address fan popularity. It comes with the whole package and you should graciously handle it. I really do not hunt for autographs, my son wanted it and asked me to ask her. I told him it was for for a child to ask because an adult to ask may be an intrusion but that she may do it for a young fan. Get real in the real world not your "in a perfect world.'

If you had explained that for an adult to ask it may be an intrusion, then it was the perfect time to teach your kid that celebrities deserve privacy, too.

Edge - That's fine. Weak serving Russians (or anyone, for that matter) deserve to get "mauled" in the pro game. But you're missing the point-whether it's a child or an adult asking for the autograph, there is a TIME and a PLACE in which to do so. But on an airplane? Where most people prefer to be left alone? Your timing and choice of place were lousy.

Sorry, but I have a bias against "autograph hounds" and star fu**ers-I think they're trash. Not saying YOU are, but what you did-and encouraged your kid to do-was, IMHO-out of line. You expected sympathy on this board for the shabby treatment that ED gave you and you're surprised that it hasn't been forthcoming. Surprise! A lot of people-not just players-believe in an individual's-even a celebrity's-right to privacy.

Yeah, Elena's reaction was pretty weird, but better that then her giving your poor kid an "F-U", which is what some others may have done. You can raise your kid anyway you like, but if it were ME I would teach him to respect the space of others, rather than shamelessly troll for autographs.

Phil, not everyone is behind you on this, so don't make it sound like that. you've said you opinion, now STFU and stop preaching....and please don't ever bring me your, 'holier than thou" attitude about raising children. That's presumptious and FOS.

Edge - I'll STFU when I chose to, not when YOU tell me to, Okay?

Now, I guess it IS presumptuous of me to talk about raising someone else's kids-I suppose any mention of the teaching of respect for privacy and basic decent behavior in public is WAY OVER THE LINE. When you mention your KID in a post connected to YOUR poor judgement, you should EXPECT someone to comment on it. Don't mention in a public forum what you don't want coming back to smack you in the face, understand?

Edge-I think I'll take a raincheck on that offer.

It certainly IS my opinion that you exercised poor judgement, but because it's JUST an opinion doesn't mean that it isn't correct. You screw*d up, period. Nothing "holier than thou" in that statement. Next time you chase someone for an autograph in an airplane or airport or shopping mall or any non-tennis playing public place and your PREY doesn't exactly knock herself out to cater to your whims, don't come crying to this board again unless you want to hear the same "opinions". Think about it.

You're just whining because a 20-year old who probably can't even get a coherent sentence out put you in your place, and you put your son in a compromising position-"Hey, son, go bug the famous tennis player..." Go cry on someone else's shoulder. If all you can say is STFU, then I take it you have no legitimate justification for what you did. You're defensive for a reason; GUILT. Ba bai, small-minded one.

Keep on provin' my point. As for children, I don't bring them into internet discussions. You sound like a child yourself, screaming in the school yard "Blow me, Blow me." If you want it done to you so badly, there are professionals to whom you can turn. Good luck.

I don't see anything wrong with what Edge did. All Dimentieva needed to do was to say "no" politely instead of lying to the kid. Granted that it is nice of her to not tell the kid to F*** off, she could have responded in so many different ways. Perhaps, Phil and others live in New York City or some other rude places and don't believe in decency especially from the people who is making pretty decent living largely thanks to the fans.

I have run into ATP pros and college players alike during tournaments and talked to them in many occasions and most of them are pretty nice about answering any questions. IMHO, there are several different kinds of players on the tour. There are those who truly care and spend as much as possible. But, then, there those who don't give any crap like Kafelnikov so long as he/she collects his/her checks. Many others lie some where in between.

In this case, Dimentieva took the low road as she did in the interview, when she had many other higher roads to take; she seems to be somewhere close to where Kafelnikov was. I don't think we should be thankful that she didn't tell the kid to F* off. As fans and human-beings, we deserve better than that.

I missed the final but saw most of the quarter against Venus. Couple observations:
Elena is hot. She could hit her second serve underhand for all I care. Once the ball is in play she's pretty good and easy on the eye.
Telling someone "I am not her" is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. The kid should have said, "you're not? Are you Anna Kournikova?"
How much could you get for a Demented (nice nickname!) autograph on ****? 10 cents?
When she shook hands with Venus it is the first time I've seen Venus look nicer than her oppenent!

    Edge/Phil: Nice comedy!

Asking a celebrity for an autograph isn't an invasion of privacy. It's not personal, nor is it a huge inconvience.

What is inconvient is trying to keep up with the WTA rankings. Or traveling hundreds of miles to a tournament. Or spending that extra bonus money on simply paying for the tournament. Or maybe it's putting up with crap seats while trying to catch a glimpse of your favorite player.

It's true, sometimes the things a celebrity does will never be enough for some people... but an autograph is a simple request considering all a player gets back from that.

Edge, you didn't teach your son anything wrong, despite what some people say here.

How often do you guys REALLY think the woman gets recognized anyway? I'd guess not often. Most people wouldn't even be able to recognize Federer or Hingis on the street.

Thanks for your support, guys. Phil was harassing me thinking that his opinion was gospel and fact rather than his condescending opinion. I understand making your point Phil, but do you have to make it 8 frickin' times?! Sorry for my profane remarks everybody, but Phil pushed my over the liimit when he took to judging how I brought up my kids. That wss stepping over the line. The only way I thought I could shut his pie hole was to stick my johnson in his mouth.

Edge - I have this nightmare. In it, I'm 50 years old, maybe a bit of a spare tire around the waste, thinking of more youthful days, and...suddenly I find myself pimping my kid for tennis celebrity autographs. Approaching another person on an airplane, in an airport...in pursuit of a signature on a piece of paper. And then I'm CRYING about the behavior of one of these young, arrogant tennis players ON A PUBLIC FORUM. And...some people are suggesting to me that maybe, just maybe, I was the wrong one and not the WRONGED ONE. And I'm ARGUING my case with one of these doubting thomases and I find myself using language that I may have used in a schoolyard, a LONG TIME ago, maybe when I was 12 or 13-"Su*k my Johnson." Homoerotic language that seems years out of place for a family man. What have I come to?

But then I awaken and realize that it was only a dream, and for a momemt I feel pity for Edge, because for HIM, it's real.

Well, I was not the first who brought this responsibility stuff into discussion, but I've made a solid contribution to it too. So, Edge you can practice your teenagers' attitude on me too.

    WW Volley said:
"... an autograph is a simple request considering all a player gets back from that. "

yes, it's just a request and as any request it can be denied.

But to hate the player for 5 years !! and even "I will never forget"
    It's just immature.

"Most people wouldn't even be able to recognize Federer or Hingis on the street."

Well, you wouldn't see them on the street often, because they try to avoid it. And, you don't need MOST people to make your life miserable. It's enough to have 5 out of 10000 to constantly run into them.

"Asking a celebrity for an autograph isn't an invasion of privacy. It's not personal, nor is it a huge inconvience. "

It is not the invasion if it's done in a proper time and place.
If it's not personal, then what is it?
it is not a huge inconvience, if it does not happen every hour 8 days a week.

BTW, Edge. If I were her, I did say to you those F words when you asked the autograph that second time at a carousel. I think you should be grateful for her "I'm not her"!

phil, there you go again about "pimping my kid." That's so far from the truth, you are such a frickin' horse's ass. Do you have to endlessly make personal judgements? What the f@uk is WRONG with you? Why don't you hug your children and LOVED them rather than continually harass me?

C-u, hug and love your children. I won't dignify your comments with a response.
