That is very tough... I hope she has made some friends she can rely on. I am glad to hear though that she has nothing to do with him, and she doesn't talk to him--I've thought for a while that's what she needed to do. For a while there it seemed like she was putting up with him, trying to support him. Luckily she's still somewhat young, maybe after some time she may start feeling better and can think about tennis again.

Yeah - I, too, hope she has some solid friends - particularly on the tour. Sounds like she'll need some reassurance. Parents hold an incredible influence over their offspring, and when that influence, or power, is misused, it can often produce devastating effects.

Sadly, Dokic lost her first round match, as well...

That first round dumping of Hingis at Wimby was no fluke, as we all found out. A terrific d-t-l backhand. Terrible forecourt game. She has the physical stuff to be a solid years long Top Ten player.

Deuce has gotten to the core of her major problem. I'm sure her internal dialogue is horribly abusive to herself, thanks to Dad. She needs a coach like Melanie Molitor and somebody like me or possibly Deuce (replacement Dad role) in a small entourage to give her positive encouragement.

    Did you?

    Hey, Peter,

Did you say something nice and sweet to her? She could use some from fans as well as friends...I wish she can overcome this and grow stronger and wiser!

PS) How's Mary Pierce (and her dad) doing?

How old is Jelena? Can't she be independent and live far away from her father? I don't see how her father needs to know what's going on in her life or be able to make comments.

    early 20s?

    23 or 24?

Even though one grew up under such a dad, it would be very difficult to be independent. Everything (abuses) must have been done in the name of love and she must have been brainwashed by her 'loving' father that he does all the crazy things because he loves her. It's a very difficult relationship to severe. On the contrary, if one grow up with full attention and love, the person will have much more chance to be mentally healthy and independent. Jelena is fighting a big fight a la Seles (well, not physically stabbed but mentally tormented for long time). I cannot remember seeing her cheering or looking triumphant. Anyone?

Anyway, No more wasted talent, please!

The tabloids' "love" for Dokic in various countries don't help either... In some ways, I imagine it's hard for her to avoid encountering her father's voice (via media)...

Nice post, Tenny, you were more dead on than you knew. Actually the physical wound from the stabbing was very minor. It was the mental and emotional problems that hurt Seles for the rest of her career. And who can blame her?

By independent I mean.....can't she live on her own and not see her dad much? She obviously does not like the things he says and does so why not distance herself physically? Her dad doesn't have to be involved in her tennis career does he?

I think you are implying she can't be an independent minded person, but she should be smart enough to live as an adult and not in the same house with her dad, right? And she should also be able to hire a manager and coach and not use her dad's services also. If she doesn't make that break her situation is not going to change.
