I thought the sf Kiefer vs Roddick match was pretty good, but nothing special(good luck to you Kiefer, hope you can win one). Anyway, my ears have compelled me to write these two complaints.

First off: The Mercedes commercial. Dont play it so much Mercedes, remember Ross Riever's commercial about Anacid? You dont want people to shoot their tv. The best commercials are used sparingly (for example, remember the Snickers commercial where that one guy was supposed to fight Tyson but he was scared because he had huge ears, god it was hilarious and even though it is like 5 years old I still remember it, HAHAHAH). As the match started it went to commercial break and during the FIRST COMMERCIAL I was eating some cornbread (mmm KFC) and I started choking on it when I heard that damn commercial, you almost killed me Mercedes, your gonna hurt someone seriously, avoid a suit, use your commercial less.

Second off: This is more important. Seperate Pmac and Cliff, seriously. Cliff is turning out even worse than Pmac. It has gotten to the point where Cliff is talking about what would have happened if Roddick had won Wimbledon and he keeps saying that Roddick will make a comeback, yup Cliff we all believe Roddick can make a 300 point comeback, sure. Everytime the guy says Roddick I feel like throwing my chicken bones at the screen, which I did a few times hahah. Anyway, PLEASE bring someone with an opposing view into the mix. I remember when I used to watch WWE wrestling; it had two completely polar commentators. One person always rooted for the "good guys" or the crowd favorites while the other one rooted for the "bad guys". It was really a great mix, I think espn should take a page from their book and start making divergent opinions. So please, bring some opposing opinions.

O yeah one last note, TY ESPN. Great coverage so far, keep it up.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts

Worst was during the one day where they showed Fed and Kuerten. Cliff goes "what a great day for me, I get to watch my favorite 2 players, Kuerten and Federer." Then Pmac being the absolute patriot moron that he is goes, "Whats wrong with Andre Cliff? Don't you like watching the Americans?" Cliff had just said who his favorite players, and PMac takes it as an assault on his country or whatever. Cliff goes, "no no, I just like to watch Fed and Kuerten the most." I felt like slapping McEnroe that little piece of who-knows-what.

I hope Federer kills Roddick tomorrow to see what PMac has to complain about then.

I don't think P Mac was offended by Cliff's comment. I think they get along pretty well, and P Mac just likes to give Cliff hard time every now and then.

I think their commentary has gotten better and better over the years. I still think Jim Courier is the best

The Mercedes commercials I can always take because they are putting up a ton of money and without them, there would be no tennis on TV (maybe no tour). I would of course enjoy seeing eight or ten different Mercedes commercials rather than the same one over and over! But, it is their money.

The announcers on the other hand bring out the same emotions in me as in you. I was watching in a bar the other day and was actually embarrased by the commentators. They are lame! They try to come off as so knowledgeable about the game but they are really boring and very uninciteful. They talk as if the audience is full of 80 year olds who are watching tennis for the first time.

If Pat's last name was not McEnroe, would he even be involved in Pro Tennis? What has this guy ever done in the game to warrant all of the opportunities that he has been given? Nice playing career but never a top player. USTA Board, why? Daddy's contributions. Davis Cup Captain. Who has he ever coached? Yet, he sits there on the air, irritating me even more acting like he knows everything there ever was to know about the game.

Bring the Jensens back to the booth, do it now!!

Bigserving, my dad and I were discussing that too. If it weren't for his brother John, Patrick would be just another nobody in tennis. He's worthless

I also hope Fed kills Roddick (again)

I haven't had the pleasure of hearing PMac comentate, here the commentators are all very informative and just let the game speak for itself with just the odd comment on a point.

Also good old Sue Barker even managed to make Federer cry (Wimbledon 2003 final interview on court)

JMac is the best commentator though, he swore 3 times on British television!! absolute legend!!

To be fair, Patrick and Cliff know the game. P-Mac's deal is that he's manic. I think this is a natural state of affairs with him.

As far as his alleged nobodiness, the guy did make semifinals of one major (Oz) and quarters of another (US). In the latter, he lost to Becker in a fairly close match that I watched. I believe it went four sets, and I also am sure that Patrick had beaten Boris at least once that same summer. In singles, he was not a world-beater but he was awfully good in doubles. He didn't win 3 mil or whatever just by being John's little brother.

Cliff was actually a great player. He brought the glove to tennis, long before Michael Jackson ever thought of it. Cliff was in a few Majors finals, at least one. He is a witty man. He could crunch a backhand long before Gaston Gaudio's parents forgot their birth control.

Larr, now when I think of the glove it is GP, Gary Payton, and soon he will be history.

I know everybody has there own opinion. That is what this country is all about. But how many of you know P mac. I have been with the davis Cup team for a year. Mac is a great guy. He is very smart, funny and knows a lot more about the game and the politics that go along with it than any of us. He has been a great Captan for the team. He works very hard for tennis as a sport. We compare him to John all the time. You say if it were not for John he would be nothing. Well take John away now look at what he has done. Who here has won an ATP tournament. Who here is on the road 20 weeks a yr promoting tennis. P Mac may not be the best ever. But he is damb good at what he does.

Pmac in singles was nothing more than a journeyman pro. Take away the McEnroe last name and i can guarantee you he wouldn't be where he is today. Pmac seems to intimidate Cliff. They should bring the Fiery Fred Stolle back . I miss the days of him and Cliff doing the commentary. At least they were fair and weren't so biased towards the American players.

I think it's great that we can sit here in the US and criticize the commercials and commentators.

At least it means we are seeing tennis!!!

For once, we aren't complaining about the matches being shown, and the fact that matches are being replayed. We're getting nit-picky about things that, in the scheme of things, are unimportant.

As you said, you can hit the mute button, take a break during the commercials, etc.

Sometimes I think folks just need something to complain about.

the mercedes commercials IMO just show you how low the viewership of tennis in the US must be. i am sure espn gave mercedes some sort of outrageous airtime pricing structure because no other advertisers would be willing to step up to the plate w. ad money for something w. such a small viewership. so we should be thankful for mercedes or we wouldnt have tennis aired at all i dont think. but it doesnt do much to put tennis in a non-elitist sort of light..i mean tennis wants to attract mainstream players and they have an elitist car manufacturer doing many of the ads. personally, i think this airing of all the tennis up to the open is kind of a last grasp attempt to try and make tv tennis go..i hope its working but i fear it is not. also still would like to know who sings the mercedes commercial..she does have a cool voice IMO and ssounds like Edie Brickell to me. rambling musings on a rainy sunday..thanks for listening..ed

I often turn off the volume while watching the matches. Those two commentators have just taken to talking constantly. When did that become the norm during tennis matches? Viewing older matches it was nice when they used actually talk only about the ongoing match and the points being played.

I really think PMac is too biased to be a commentator. It's like having Brad Gilbert comment.

Yes, I also hope Federer beats Roddick today in Canada. Not sure though because he's looked out of sorts. Still it's hard to compare because Federer's had to face very different styles while Roddick has only faced the average type player that he's played frequently.

If you need a rationalization for why Fed hasn't looked God-like out there, I guess this will do as well as any.

But he hasn't exactly faced the Top 10 this week. Santoro can be a difficult player, but he hasn't exactly been tearing up the singles Tour this year. And Lucky Loser Johansson was just that -- lucky that Taylor Dent withdrew at the last moment.

Roddick has had trouble with Chela on hardcourts in the past, and Kiefer has been the hottest player on the summer circuit.

I just don't see where Fed has had it any worse than Roddick in this draw. In fact, Roddick had to play a lefty (Lopez).

But if we need a rationalization for why Andy may lose -- how about this? He's played only night matches this whole event, and now he has to play the final during the day.

No need trying to explain anything Susan. In every post, PJVA will snort out the same ol' stuff about how Fed always has the tougher draw, or how he's struggling because of the sniffles, or how his eggs weren't cooked exactly right in the morning. *YAWN*.

See I wish I could mute it, but I hate not being able to hear the blast of the ball, and the way players react, what they are saying, etc. I wish you could play it without the commentators noise, just the sound from the court

  21. Oh my god, you thought you had it bad before. PMac is home this week and Mal is back. I'm gonna email Mal at ESPN and suggest he say about 25% of the total volume of words as he currently does. Bad bad bad. I just about threw a brick at the box last night during Fish/AA.

I just can't beleive everytime they say that players flick their wrists to get spin, which is so stupid. PLAYERS DO NOT FLICK THEIR WRISTS! THIS IS A PROVEN FACT AMONG PROPLAYERS!

Its true drakulie, they do say some outrageous things. Its as if they are talking to tennis noobs every day. They repeat themselves over and over. Roddick this...Roddick that...Roddick is so good....blah blah blah. They only hype Roddick. Simply sickening. I also want to mute the tv. I wish I was commentator.
