It's a way to remove the lactic acid from muscles. Lactic acid builds especially quickly during hot weather and it will increase the soreness of muscles unless removed. An ice bath is a good way to do it.

I know Australia's World Cup team was soaking in ice baths after the especially hot weather during the first few days of the competition.
