we have serious problems in tennis in the U.S.

We already know ESPN gives it low precedence, but when the top players are playing Davis Cup, and you guys poo-poo it,

well, what kind of message is that sending?

It certainly isn't helping. You want international coverage, and yet, you aren't interested in it when it comes to Davis Cup.

I don't get it, and perhaps that is why ESPN and others don't get it either. No consistency.

Why can't tennis, as it goes forward, be different from other sports and reject the nationalistic/jingoistic format more suited to team sports like soccer's world cup? Tennis is really based on individual achievement and even in doubles teams are often international. I'd like to see tennis out of the olympics as well. That said, I appreciate your taking the time to publish on these boards your well-written and informative accounts of the action at Delray.

the thing about davis cup and americans is davis cup is all about passion for your country. America has a lot of pride, yes, but it's invested in other places. Davis cup is huge for europeans because it and soccer are where people can dress up like idiots and wave oversized flags around.

Davis cup can be enjoyed by tennis fans in general...but how many really inhabit these boards? :>

I'm all for going apeshit for russia (davydenko is ukrainian, so if he ever gets to play, he gets my support). I like france too..but they're playing roger, so he gets precedence. of course france essentially won now, poor roger can't do EVERYTHINg by himself.

I've been to Davis Cup matches and they're great for atmosphere.

But the format of the tournament is stupid.

    1. It should not happen every year. There was the ridiculous situation 2-3 years ago when Spain won in it December and then lost in the first round 2 months later.

    2. No-one understands the structure of the world group, relegation playoffs, etc.

    3. The 3 day format gives a bum day on Saturday (who cares about doubles) and a 50/50 chance of a bum day on Sunday as well.

I think they should make it every 4 years, and clear a 2 week period for the whole event, from last 16 through to final. Then people might get excited about it.

not every 4 years man! thats what the olympics are for. It should be every 2 years, give it some value and give people some time.having it every 2 years might even get it played on big networks (SO US IN CANADA CAN SEE MATCHES) It seems kinda pointless to have it yearly. Spain should win the majority of the years... Man, imagine switzerland winning it by virtue of federer alone? That would make my century.

Fat Boy, did you forget that the Aussies won it in 2003 only to lose their next tie?
