If Nadal had lost Wimbledon 2008, would he have gone into a mental slump?

Remember the Wimbledon 2007 story? Once the final was lost, Nadal wept in private thinking his hopes and dreams were over.
Imagine even with the 2 match points he had in the 2008 Wimbledon final and down 3-4 and 30-40 that Federer got the break and beat him for a 3rd straight time. Would Nadal, even despite his warrior spirit, have managed to gain the confidence to go onward and get over it? Or would that have been the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak?

Going off the 2007 Wimbledon loss and the report of Nadal being absolutely devastated and heartbroken after that loss. Do you think losing again in the 2008 final even while being up 2 sets to love and having match points that it would've sent him into a den of despair?

no, because why would he feel depressed losing to someone of fed's standing?

he only seems to slump when he loses unexpectedly.

Such speculation is pointless. But if you want me to go along I'll say he wouldn't have got the Gold Medal but Fed would have got it (still don't know why he lost to Blake of all people). Certainly 2009 AO would be Fed's. But on the other hand it's possible that Nadal wouldn't have lost 2009 FO and dominated in 2009 instead.

The divorce of Nadal's parents was inevitable as likely was the damage of Nadal's knees.

Losing W2008 would have destroyed Nadal and his career off clay.

I think if Fed had won Wimby 2008 he would also have won AO 2009 (also a 5-setter lost to Nadal). Nadal's clutch win at Wimby had the effect of tipping the scale towards Nadal such that he had a mental edge on Fed on all surfaces other than indoor hard. That was a hard loss for Fed. In my view, if Fed had won Wimby '08, he would have had a very good chance of winning AO '09 and USO '09 (he lost in 5 sets to Delpo) as well. And he already won FO '09 and Wimby '09 so that could have been his Grand Slam year. Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Hehehe.... Oh well.

I doubt it. Whilst I agree that he prbly wouldn't have won AO the next year, he had just crushed Fed at RG so it's not like he was losing to the world number 100 in the second round or anything.

I don't think so. His more painful loses were against Soderling and the Djokovic finals. he bounced back.

If Mike Shams went a single day without posting a nonsense thread or post, would he go into a mental slump?

No, but he would have been out with injury for a few months.

    (I kid... :)

Huge Blow to Nadal if Federer somehow pulled off Wimbledon 2008.

Absolutely. But then I don't think he would be "injured" in '09.

Would you ever Rise from your perpetual belief that Nadal is going to lose every match he ever plays?

He lost 3 slam finals back to back to Nole. I think he would have been fine.
