Federer, Djokovic, Murray and Del Potro, the top players, were all entered.

If Nadal wins this, it is convincing proof that he is the best in the world.

Before you say "He did not beat Federer," remember when Federer won FO and W, he did not beat Nadal. If then it was OK to declare him the GOAT with 15 Slams in spite of Nadal not being around, it should be OK to consider Nadal the best in the world if he wins Paris indoors.

Your logic is flawed. You're saying here that it's okay to declare them both GOAT.

Um, that doesn't make much sense really? How can winning a tournament where others lose make him the best in the world? surely that theory could apply to anyone?
If he wins, it'll just prove he was the best at that particular tournament

It proves that he can win another Masters tournament, a second indoor title for his career and that he's taken a big stride forward. He would also equal Federer's total of 16 Masters titles, and each of them would be 1 behind Agassi's record.

As for being world number 1, not unless he actually does so in the rankings.

I don't think he will pass Federer in rank.

What it would prove is that Nadal can win when Federer loses to someone else, as well as when he plays Federer. Federer can win only when Nadal loses to someone else. Guess who must be the better player?

OMG another thread littered in fail. If Nadal wins Paris - it means he has won another 1000 series. Is JMDP the GOAT because he beat RN and RF back to back at a slam?

I'll always support Nadal over Federer, but Federer has beaten Nadal in 2 Wimbledon finals, 3 Masters finals and 2 Masters Cup semi finals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Federer beat Nadal the last time they played...on clay even?

If Nadal wins it means he's back to top form and should be a favorite for the World Tour Finals in London.

If he wins there, then we can speculate on who is the real #1 and whatnot.

If Nadal wins Paris then it doesn't mean anytihng as cincinatti is the 'real slam'.

i guess we will see threads on why Nadal is the best ever because there are just a team of players around him who choke on purpose to give him matches.

The Masters Cup will be a better indication. They'll fight for the #1 ranking there.

He did, but considering that crazy match against Djokovic less than 24 hours earlier, it was hardly surprising. I was surprised, but delighted, when Nadal beat Federer in the 2008 Hamburg final, considering how much more tired Nadal was.

A win is a win is a win.

Not Federer's fault if Nadal is too tired. Not Nadal's fault if Federer has mono. Not Soderling's fault if Nadal has bad knees - etc. etc.

I agree, I'm just saying that it wasn't surprising that Federer won the Madrid final. As for Soderling at the French Open, I think that's the biggest upset in tennis history that I can think of, but a fully deserved victory for Soderling on the day.

Soderling deserved it - and it was a big upset. But if it was the biggest in all history is hard for me to say. Maybe?

I think at this moment that Nadal is playing better than Federer. But I also say that both guys are not playing at their best. Maybe Nole is the guy to beat in Paris then in London.

But then again, Djokovic hardly played great against Soderling today while Nadal played well against Tsonga. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the Nadal vs. Djokovic match.

Ya, the interesting part is that both can play awesome out of nowhere. Nadal did it against Tsonga today but it could be Nole's turn tomorrow. I hope they both play awesome and give us a good match.

It proves that everyone who lost in this tourney and any other tourney in the future should retire.

Bottom line is that if you lose even a single match, you should retire.

    Well, by sureshs's logic

    Nadal has 7 slams

    Don't forget Monte Carlo 2008

All 4 Top seeds made the semifinals

AND the top 2 seeds made the finals

    Monte Carlo 2008 > Cincinnati 2009

    :)

Nadal would be the clear no.1 if not for injury, we all know that. He will be official no.1 next summer, we have to deal with fake ranking a few more months, that's all. Nadal and Djokovic will dominate tennis in 2010.

if Nadal wins Paris indoors by beating Tsonga and then Djokovic and then maybe Stepanek (an excellent indoor player) then you've got to give it up for him
indoor courts are usually his worst surface so that would be an Amazing results!!!

It proves -to some of his own fans also-that one must never count Nadal out. He's there and he's doing well.
As for being the 'best' player in the world..

It proves that he's the 2nd best player in the world, although we already knew that by his winning 1 slam and having the #2 ranking. The best player in the world is ranked #1 and has 2 slams. Pretty much end of discussion.
