You have a good point. The SEC was brutal this year so I'm sure that had a lot to do with his "struggles." Getting out of that meat grinder is a good step. Illinois' schedule is usually pretty tough too but nothing like the SEC.

Certainly. Other conferences are tough as well, and Illinois plays a tough nonconference schedule. But, there is little bit more breathing room.

And, I'm only hypothesizing that the brutal schedule was the reason for his struggles. Maybe there were other issues. But, even if there were, the brutal conference schedule and never really getting an "off" match only exacerbates whatever those problems are.

I saw that he was playing in the Decatur tournament and lost in the quarterfinals. There have been some kind of injuries involved as well (speculating) but it's good to see he's playing in the tournaments.

By the way, who are you a fan of? Seems like I read that you were a Michigan fan but maybe I got you mixed up with someone else.

    No, not Michigan

I have allegiance to three Big 10 teams

    1. Minnesota - my home state
    2. Northwestern - undergrad
    3. Illinois - law school.

[BTW, I still live in Illinois, and have now lived in Illinois longer than my 18 years in Minnesota, which is sort of scary to ponder]

In tennis (at least mens tennis), I root for Illinois, because I really started following college tennis when I was at Illinois, which included their championship season in 2003. I had never seen a live college tennis match before then.

Everything else, I generally root for NU first, Illinois second. MN is a distant third. Big fans of both NU and IL, but if they're playing head to head, I'll root for NU.

Overall, I want to see all of those teams do well.

Cool about Illinois. I'll forgive you for Northwestern.

I'm originally from Jax, Florida so grew up a Gator and became an Illini when I got my masters there. I'll root for the Gators unless they are playing Illinois.

I went down to Jax last weekend for the Scotland-USA soccer. Fun time although the game was shocking, I was pleasantly surprised about Jax

I have never enjpyed Florida much, Jax seemed a bit less Florida and just generally a nice place, my expectations were low I guess.

The seeds are determined by the regular season standings. There are three 1st round matches followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Illinois has won the Big Ten Championships tournament seven times (’99, ’00, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’05,’12)."

With the addition of Nebraska, are there 4 first round matches now, or is there a Big 10 school without mens tennis, which would be totally possible?

They've actually won a Big Ten title before ('58 ). Wisconsin and Purdue have never won a conference title. But Iowa was pretty bad this year. 1-22 and 0-11.

They have a great chance. But, they've been stacked for a while, and have come up short.

I think the experience they had this year and bitter loss to USC in the finals will help them a great deal. so they will be favored to win it all next year and they will most likely do just that. but if they have injury issues going into the tournament, it could come back to bite them in the back. but keeping players healthy has not been a problem for them in the past.

but also dark horse for next year would be Stanford. They have 3 players coming in that are top 10 talents in junior 18's. they will be inexperienced but stacked with talent. so if they pull off a surprising NCAA win, they will be deserving of it.

Actually, keeping players healthy has been a very big problem at Virginia in the past, and it is way too early to project what the (healthy) lineup will be in May of 2013.

I remember a network, probably ESPN, reporting about Maryland's players being able to transfer and play right away without having to sit out a year. News like that can get people confused as to what the situation really is.

Yes, Maryland's players can transfer and play right away, but so can everyone else's players in tennis.

The only possible difference is that most conference make you sit out a year if you transfer within the conference and will now be playing against your former school. Maryland players might have gotten a special break from the ACC due to the special circumstances, just like Matt Brooklyn (#1 for Arizona State) who went inside the Pac-10 to UCLA and played immediately after Arizona State cancelled their men's tennis team.

Blake Bazarnik is changing conferences, so none of that intra-conference stuff applies to him, anyway.

Anderson has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Aegon Championships. He beat #5 seed Lopez 7-6(12), 7-6(7) today. Highest seed left is Tipsarevic and he was down a set when rain stopped play. Great chance. Plays #72 Grigor Dimitrov tomorrow.

Anderson got a good started but ened up losing 6-3 in the third in the quartefinals of the Aegon Championships. Still, he gets some valuable ranking points and will be seeded at Wimbledon!

    Satsuma,
Not sure if you saw this, but there was an Open tournament in Edwardsville, IL that was giving a WC to their futures tournament. Abdelnour, Gosea, Bazarnik and Jesse were there, with Gosea beating Abdelnour in the finals. They won doubles together.
There is another very high level open tournament in Godfrey, IL this weekend, and thus far, Bazarnik and Gosea are both entered.

Rajeev Ram was up a set and a break but lost to Dustin Brown in four sets to just miss the main draw. Anderson just barely squeezed in the seeding at No. 32. The draws come out on Friday.

Nevolo was playing in a Futures down in Florida but lost in three sets to his nemesis Mitchell Frank.
