Bit late to the party with this one, but no discussion thread yet.

Some interesting R64 matchups to kick us off: Vika vs Keys, Sloane vs Venus, Urszula vs Ivanović.

Renka vs Sugar potential SF looks tasty, Maria in fine form at the moment. Really hope Victoria's ankle can hold up, could have some great matches this week.

Great to see Na Li back, and really hopeful that Kvitova can regain some of her Feb form.

If it's true, Miami is a mini-disaster this year.

This is a great opportunity for a young American to go deep in the draw. McHale, Keys, Hampton, or Davis could end up in the quarters, and if not, young Brit Robson or the Frenchie on a resurgence, Cornet.

Meh, look like Keys is going to flop to Davis anyways; must not be playing the way she played against Stosur last week which was actually a solid performance.

As for who's going to win the tournament, that'd be Serena of course!

I arrived at the Sony Open this morning to watch Azarenka v Keys live but of course find out that Aza pulled out and is replaced by Lauren Davis. Booooooo!! So I walk to the grandstand to watch Kuznetsova v Makarova. Sveta was down 0-3 when I arrived but I saw AMAZING tennis from both players. Sveta won the first set 6-4 and was up 2-0 in the second set when her mind went to the places that she tends to go where she can't keep a ball on the court or her serve over the net. She got it together and won the second set 6-4. When Sveta is playing well it is easy to see why she won 2 slams. She is athletic, powerful and has every shot in the book. It was great to watch live.

Yeah Sveta is a joy to watch when she's playing well, hopefully she'll be seeded by RG.

Just watched some of Wozniacki on the practice courts. Oh my Goodness! Dad even micromanages practice. While most other players hit with their hitting partner and the coach says something from time to time, he is gabbing at her constantly. She needs to ditch Dad now. But I know it isn't going to happen.

Sadly I dont think it will happen. He WANTS to be the one to get her to the top again more than he wants her to get to the top, if that makes sense.

Daddy wont let her get better with other people.

Bad day for the American girls.

McHale blew a 1-set lead to Vinci, as did Hampton against Suarez Navarro.

The most disappointing was Madison Keys. Having Azarenka withdraw gave her a huge opportunity to make an impact at this tournament and she played like a scrub against a (imo) lesser American, Lauren Davis. Get it together girl! That should've been a routine straight setter if you ask me.

Speaking of Azarenka withdrawing, all I can say is thank god. It's bad enough her ******bag boyfriend finally released the song with her grunting in it, at least now we don't have to hear it on the court.

Madison will be having nightmares for a while. She had 3 match points in the third set tiebreak serving at 6-3. She hit a great shot that Lauren managed to get back as a high and short sitter. That should have been the match but Madison hit that ball straight into the net. She will be thinking about that shot for a long time. Lauren is 5'2" has tree trunks for thighs and gets every ball back. Madison had something like 38-40W/70+UE. Lauren ended up with 10W/30+UE

So what are Venus's chances against Sloane tomorrow?
While I would like to see Venus win she played pretty horrible against Date. Her serve was a mess, she blew a 5-2 lead in the first and needed 7 match points to win.

I know Date is a fighter..but it was clear Venus was all sorts of struggling and Sloane isn't exactly the type to roll over and play dead...

I like Venus bit unless she serves about 10x better than yesterday Sloane may straight set her.

Madison is a big hitter who goes for angles and deep shots vs Davis who an aggressive defensive counter puncher (least that what she looks like to me in what Little footage I have seen). Madison looks amazing when she is clicking but her game is so high risk that if its not working its a mess. Its like she following the Williams model of big hitting big winners...which is not a bad thing really..just not great as her ball control is at times well...erratic and it showed against Davis.

I was at that match and I agree with you. It all started and ended with Venus' non-existent first serve. If she serves that way against Sloane Stephens, Venus will go home early. Venus' first serves didn't go any higher than 113mph and her second serves were like 68mph. I'm predicting a Sloane victory.

I have to agree...Venus blowing 6 match points on her serve was flat out horrible to watch. Her First serve is her weapon and it disappeared before it really showed up. She was useless on her 2nd serve..Watching Venus serve that way was just painful knowing how good she can serve.

I will say though as bad as her serve was, she really took it to Date with her return. The only reason she stayed in that match and eventually won it really was on the base of her return game.

Sadly I just don't think Venus can ride that alone to beat Sloane..because in my opinion she was kinda lucky to get past Date.

Yup - power off in the whole complex.

There was a separate earlier power cut after the resumption of the Cornet v Robson match (following a break of several hours due to rain). They finished the 2nd set, and then ANOTHER power cut. Embarrassing...

I don't think there is video coverage of that match.

    So that's what happened.

I thought I was going crazy but I swore it was Azarenka versus Keys and then when I checked the score it was Lauren Davis versus Keys.

Madison really let an opportunity slip bye.

Lol - I bet on Cornet after the first set. Having seen how the match has been played out, I think we're both as crazy as each other just to have any involvement in it.

Tbh I don't think I'd write off Robson now even down a double break.

Maria Sharapova just completed her routine early round beat down 6-2;6-0 against Eugenie Bouchard. Maria was just too powerful, too accurate for Eugenie. Maria never misses those swinging volleys.

I just don't understand how it's even possible to have 17 double faults in a match...and Robson hasn't had a break point since the first set so I doubt she has any chance of a comeback.

Both the young British girls have been struggling since moving up the rankings. They're still young, but really need to improve their mental resolve.

Heather Watson and Robson in recent weeks have kept getting into seemingly impregnable positions and then tanking.

That was the main reason I decided to back Cornet today, despite having a general rule not to touch WTA matches.

Hopefully either Cornet or Davis can make the quarters in this section of the draw. Some new faces need to be introduced to women's tennis. I know Cornet isn't new, but she is still relatively young. It would be good for French tennis if she could find her game again and make it back to the top 20. It would also be good for American tennis to see that Sloane isn't the only up and comer. Vinci's game puts me to sleep and a Kerber/Vinci matchup in the quarters does not interest me

You're both right about Watson and Robson. They are both still relatively young but mentally they just look like they suffer immensely. Robson is super talented but that number of double faults is just criminal.

They got to pull it together.

Well to be honest Britain is probably just as hungry for a female of the future as the USA. Britain for a long time had top females than after Virginia Wade suddenly they had nobody, well unless Jo Durie counts....

Given the emergence of Murray these girls probably feel a ton of pressure to break through as well given the history of Tennis in Britain is pretty deep.

Now that's not really an excuse...but they are probably both going through similar things to what Stephens, McHale, Keys, Burdette and the rest of the Americans are..pressure to be the next it girl.

Trying to understand the WTA will only make your head hurt.

I think hingis has tactually tanked sets which ended 6-0 before but I don't think you can credit that as an explanation to the current WTA.

I said it in another thread, but Muguruza is the real deal. Very talented teenager, I am not surprised by this at all. Her game is perfectly suited to deal with Wozniacki--very aggressive.

Plus her ranking is a bit misleading...she has been quietly moving up the rankings since the beginning of the year.
