I've noticed that. Seems like she could be a force. I'm more surprised that Radwanska is down 5-1 in the 2nd set.

Oh goodness I know. I've been watching this match and Agnieszka has been playing dreadfully. She's hitting A LOT of errors--way more than her style of play can afford. Rybarikova isn't doing much besides applying the pressure by coming to net whenever possible, still it's mostly due to Radwanska's low level and Magdalena playing solid enough to take advantage in the second set. Lets hope Aggie can get it together...she is so prone to early-round losses, it's disappointing :(

I'm courtside right now watching this match. Muguruza is schooling Woz right now. Her shots are so flat and deep like they are skimming just over the net but landing just in front of the baseline. She's got a big serve too. I'm waiting for Woz to break out the moonball.

Muguruza has been most impressive. She didn't get the initials hype so she's been sneaking up the rankings almost undetected.

Yes, to be perfectly honest if she hadn't played Serena at the AO this year I would probably have no idea who she was. Early on in that match she was going toe-to-toe with Williams and her talent really caught my attention. She is definitely one to watch this year and hopefully will be a force in the coming years as well. I'm interested in seeing how well her game holds up on the grass at Wimbledon...big serve, big groundstrokes; her and Madison Keys seem well-suited for grass, so it should be exciting!

It's always hard to tell lol although she is showing some signs of fight here early in the 3rd, holding at love in her opening service game after being broke every time she went to serve in the 2nd. She is definitely thinking out there and I don't think she is just going to give it away at this point. Like I said, it's not really like Rybarikova is outplaying her, it's mostly her getting in her own way.

And she has now broken Magdalena and serving at 2-1 in the final set. She has cleaned up her game considerably so far

edit - and make that 3-1! Still Aggie has had a lot of trouble putting the ball away at the net today, it's a little worrisome

Very impressive way to close out the match by Muguruza. Not only does she break Woz to go up 5-4 she actually wins her service game at 15. I think she got all her first serves in. She hit big serves and big forehands and was cool as ice.

    Petra up next!

Garbine was to good for her. She hits hard and deep and her shots clicked today. Really this one could have gone either way because I watched her against Serena and she went in spurts in that match. I figured Woz would win simply because in order to beat Woz you not only have to beat her down you have to do so clean...Garbine did just that. Power to her. Probably helped that Woz was just in the IW final and very few players seem to do well back to back at those events on the women's side...

But ya..this is a good win for Garbine, her game is something to watch...still evolving..would he nice to have a strong Spaniard on the WTA again...because heaven knows it won't be Suarez Navarro

Manages to come through in the end but I don't like her chances looking forward....she'll need to play a lot better than she did today against either Sloane or Venus.

Rybarikova is dangerous. She can hit aggressively and when she plays well she is a pain in the rear. She can hit with power and the fact that she keeps forcing her way up to net is really aggravating Aga. Plus Aga is defending champ..so she is expected to do well here..so there's pressure she is probably putting on herself because of that

The way Venus played against Date, Aga could play the way she did today and win quite easily. Her first serves barely broke 110 and her second serves were around 70...

Aga played pretty poor today all thing considered but she still looked better than Venus I think.

It's been pretty much craptastic play from Kvitova so far. Error, error, error. Flipkens up 6-0.

True, but Venus has a tendency of picking up her game when she really needs to. I think the fact that her first round against Date was the first one she has played for a while, and the fact that Date is a fighter who has given her tough matches in the past, had something to do with Venus's low level. I wouldn't expect her to play that way against Radwanska, especially considering the amount of time she would have to set up her shots and really tee off on Aga's groundies. But you're right. Still, Radwanska really needs to up her level if she wants to go deep in this tournament.

Venus does..but the level to which she can raise herself is a lot lower now. Before last year Venus owed Aga big time, wasn't even a contest when they played..last year they played twice and Aga pretty much knocked her to pieces. Now..Venus is a little fitter now and Aga isn't playing great, but I don't think the gap has closed enough for me to say Venus could beat her the way she is now. I think it would still take a huge effort and a near perfect quick performance to do it. I just don't know if Venus is really capable of that anymore.

I agree about Aga...her level has dropped from where she was this time last year, her anticipation seems off and she's not being anywhere near as assertive as she should be...if she is serious about defending this title she better raise her game up.

I think getting to #2 and reaching the Wimbledon final really took its toll on Radwanska mentally. She doesn't play as aggressive anymore as she was playing last year and to me it looks like she is scared of losing because she knows (or feels) that she should be winning. She's definitely feeling the pressure and expectations of being in the top 4 and really hasn't looked like the same player since Wimbledon.

I've been coming to this tournament every year for the past 6 years and this one has been the worst in terms of no shows and walkovers. We used to call ourselves the 5th slam but since Indian Wells has had such an influx of capital from Larry Ellison, Miami is getting left in the dust. I'm still having a great time.

If the players split sets, I think there is a heat rule that allows the women to leave the court to take a shower. Since that takes longer than usual, maybe they call it suspension due to heat. ??

    1-4 Kvitova down.

Its happening on the men's side also. A whole bunch of people have either retired during their matches or before them. I don't get it at all. I mean Miami being after IW has always been a difficult 1-2 punch for players to deal with bit this high a number of retirements is flat out ridiculous.

Yikes this match has really been a disaster from Kvitova. 0-40 now to go down 1-5....I don't think she can dig herself out of this hole.

GSM for Flipkens. 6-1 in the third. I'm officially off the Kvitova bandwagon. I wish her well but didn't see anything that bodes well for her. She certainly doesn't have the mentality of a top player. Maybe I'll join the Muguruza bandwagon.

Well, the humidity and heat is extremely high out there today. Kvitova struggles in those conditions because of her asthma.

I did see her use her inhaler during a changeover in the first set but she didn't appear to have any difficulty breathing or seem to be huffing or puffing. Flipkens played smartly. She would chip back her returns deep with no pace. She recognized early that Kvitova was having trouble with her slice (into the net most of the time) and she used it against her.

I've noticed that with Kvitova. She REALLY struggles a lot when you hit slices at her. She loves pace and if you switch it up on her she makes countless errors.

Facepalm.... Morita really just looks like she's trying too hard. She should try to stay in the rallies longer rather than going for so many winners, she is really spraying the ball. Good on her for trying to dictate against Serena though I guess :p pretty much the only chance she has.

Either try to dictate, or try to throw Serena's timing off. Either way, it's an uphill battle. Serena adapts to everything pretty much. But yeah go down fighting.

Fed cup with Germany. Lisicki's slice was making Kvitova fumble. Fortunately for Petra that match, Sabine was just brainlessly trying to out blast her instead of playing different balls to find opening to work on.
