Just seen the player party photos. I'm no woman, but it's my understanding that wearing heels can lead to ankle injuries. If so, why would Ke$harenka wear heels to the player party if she's got a dodgy ankle?

Only conclusion can be that she either never intended on playing or she's lying. I'm going with the former.

All I can say is...wow. That was PATHETIC from Kerber. Was she even trying? It looked like she completely tanked that second set. Seriously, I went to make myself a salad after the first set and I come back to it being 4-0 in favor of Cirstea, with Angelique losing the match literally 4 minutes later.

Well lets hope Sharapova/Vesnina is more entertaining that that horrorfest.

......HAHAHAH yeah right, Vesnina will be lucky if she lasts more than an hour out there.

If Vesnina wins this match somehow I will eat my hat. Up 2-1 in the first and 0-40 on Maria's serve, Elena has 5 winners to 0 from Sharapova  I really hope she can keep this up, I would love to see Maria knocked out :)

    - and she breaks for 3-1! Sharapova is extremely flat, I reckon the wind is throwing her off. Vesnina can totally capitalize on this opportunity if she doesn't let the occasion get to her. She did win their last meeting (albeit that was in 2010...)

Dang, it's like Sharapova knew I was tuning in and decided to even things out. 3-3

If Vesnina would just learn to CAPITALIZE on her opportunities she could easily be up a set and a break right now.

Kerbers section of the draw just opened up BIG TIME. Good opportunity for JJ to make a deep run here and regain her form, or maybe younger players who never made it that big but still lost their games, cirstea and cornet?

I like Cirstea a lot, she was hitting very well in that first set. I think Kerber's back may have been bothering her though, which would explain set 2. Hope Sorana can have a go of it here, would like to see her do well. Don't think she's a terribly smart player though, doesn't build points too well.

Very enjoyable match, watched from the very beginning.

My only question is - how on earth is Vinci in the top 15? She has NO backhand AT ALL.

While the match was pretty good (and it's not often I say that about a WTA match other than the occasional Azarenka/Sharapova drubbing by Serena) I couldn't escape the thought what Nadal would do to these funny slices. I mean he'd kill her.

Muguruza stands toe to toe with Na Li in long rallies, winning with a on-the-rise FH

too bad both damage the esthetics with those leg wrappings:-[

Embarrassing stuff from Li. Up 5-1 in the set and is now down 6-5 serving to try and force a tiebreaker.

Apparently you haven't been watching her opponent play lately, close to a QF at IW and second year in a row in 4th rd at Miami and only 19. Match not over yet :)

Muguruz is a great player but as you can see Li is the one dictating play. Check winners and unforced error count.

Wrong on both. Watch the match before commenting. She isn't moving at all or hitting with any authority. Balls are either flying 2 feet out or getting dumped halfway into the net. Cibulkova isn't doing anything but keeping the ball in play. Go troll another thread.

That's unfair, Cibulkova is (was) playing very well. Hitting the ball high, hard and accurate.

Is Serena injured or something? There are balls she would normally CRUSH and today she is barely pushing them back over the net.

I didn't mean she wasn't playing well, but it's not like she was doing anything special/dominating Williams. Serena was hardly even swinging at the balls in the rallies towards the end of the 1st set.

As you can now see by the score, it was a matter of Serena coming out half asleep more than Dominika coming out on fire. Now that she is apparently awake she has knocked off the last 5 games and is serving for set 2.

lol at anybody giving any kind of credit to Cibulkova. Serena simply wasn't engaged in the match. Now she is. You see the difference.

You don't win a set 6-2 against Williams without doing something right, even if Serena is playing poorly.

You can play well against Serena and get crushed...

Two DFs from Cibulkova to gift Serena a break to start the 3rd.

Wow, she is worse than I thought.

GSM Serena 2/6 6/4 6/2, on to play Li Na.

She'll need to improve big time for for that.

    Fun fact:

Serena has won .451 pct of matches when losing first set in career, best among active players; next best is Sharapova (.385)

Additionally... Since 2009, Serena is 21-20 (.512) when dropping the first set.

Not sure about that. Apparently Li blew a 5-1 lead in the first set against Muguruza (who!?)...

Li can be really erratic at times.
