Shriekapova just isn't that good. Her game is 1% inspiration, 99% intimidation.

9 games in a row for Serena. The end is nigh.

Wow. Maria was up 3-2 and serving in the second. Then she lost 10 straight games.

Again, no one has an answer for an "on" Serena.

Maria is literally my least favorite player in tennis, but, if everyone not good enough to handle a zoned-in Serena retired, Serena would be the only player in tennis. Probably ever.

People overlook the fact that Sharapova is the biggest b!tch on tour because she's tall and blonde.

How does the bagel taste Maria?

I honestly don't see what other people see. Don't get me wrong, I don't think she's unattractive, but some tennis fans view her as unattainable beauty. I just think she's far from that.

I think her being able to play tennis gave her a lot of points as far as being "attractive" goes.

Anyway, back to the tennis. This match really shows difference Serena and everyone else, the footwork. At 30+, she still has better footwork than someone younger than her, taking little steps to adjust to the wind.

Shriekpova and her slow ogre steps just didn't cut it.

Actually I don't even think Serena's footwork is that good, she is just so talented and determined that despite being sluggish to move to some balls she can still hit winners off them.

Imagine if she had Steffi Graf's footwork

Alright, Steffi Graf's is in a another league. But, can I say that compared Shriekapova's big tree stumps ogre steps, Serena is really better?

Wow, Serena is the bomb. Maria gave her all and her best in the first set. Contrary to Hogstedt's advice, it's not all in the head, Serena is just a way better player than Maria. Ninth year of not winning a match against her. Why are they paying Maria so much? 4 slams in 12 years. I don't get it.

didn't watch the match, was out with friends, will catch replay.

just wanted to chime in on the sharapova attractiveness issue... she's very hot for a tennis player. doesn't have the overly muscular disproportionate sized thighs/shoulders that some of her competitors have. is feminine; not butch.

really good looking compared to most people, but not at the level of models, etc... i.e. people who make a living primarily on their looks. not an "unattainable" beauty. just another tall thin blonde with a plain, but symmetrical face.

she's a lot better looking in person. far more striking and soft than she appears on screen. head turner.

It was a very good match. Good to see some women play tennis all out. Even thought the final set set score was a blow out - most of the points were pretty well contested!

Congratulations to both ladies for a well played match!

I've always wondered if anyone else saw that. She's very disproportionate. It's like a tale of three bodies. If you took a full length picture of her and cut it into three pieces you wouldn't be able to guess her body type at all. From the waist down she's wide and strong. The torso area is very petite, but then the shoulders are broad and wide. She's picked up weight over the years so it's getting more noticeable.

If a redlining Sharapova cant put Serena away from a set and a break up, I really dont know who can when Serena is foucussed.

I have never seen Sharapova play as well as the first set EVER. Her Serve was booming and over 70%, return, forehand and backhand all firing, with great depth and angle, and her movement was execptional by her standards.

I dont think Maria will ever beat Serena again.

Serena now 1000 points clear of Sharapova and about 800 over Azarenka, though both still lead her in the race.

    Well...she's fake in many ways.

Typical of players knowing they have no chance, they bet on throwing everything into a set (hoping to overwhelm), then run out of gas/ideas, finally accepting the deserved trouncing.

Now, we will read certain TW members claim Miami is "not important" all in an effort to defend Sharapova's blink-and-you-missed-it dignity.

    Surprised Sharapova got a set.

Serena's insistence on shaking the umpire's hand first is bordering on obsession at this point. Oracene should give her a few pointers on class. Twirl was cool though!

If Serena hadn't been throwing so many losing points in set 1 this could have been a crushing. I guess Serena wanted to hear the fans urge her on, she doesn't get the most love as a player. I was figuring Serena would win, after all she considers Miami home, and boycotts Indian Wells.

I don't think Maria would have won the first set if Serena didn't have such a crappy UE count for the set. Serena didn't seem to be in it the first set. I do think Maria played great the first set, but I do think she totally benefited from Serena's crappy play. Let's face it, it's baby steps for Maria. It's her first set off Serena since 2008..... 5 years.........

a lot of female tennis players have big bulging shoulders that look almost too big for their bodies. of course, it serves* a purpose given their chosen profession, but isn't as aesthetically pleasing to the eye. too much of a masculine V shape sometimes as well. Sharapova doesn't suffer from this as she has nice hips for such a tall woman.

    * No pun intended.

I've always wondered if Sharapova could have made a good competitive swimmer. Most of the elite swimmers have something like that kind of broad-shouldered and tall frame.

How many women in tennis have won four slams and the Career Slam to boot?
How many women in tennis or women athletes period are as attractive as Sharapova? There is your answer. They don't throw money at dogs who don't sell product for their company.

I also wonder how much they pay Serena vs Maria? Let's face it, Maria makes more because she's white. Serena is far better of a player, but not as marketable, and there's only one reason. Please inform me of any reason other than skin color. Serena didn't have issues at USOpen until 2009, and had been screwed over before that by umpires. Serena has screwed up in a few matches, but the earning power was based on Maria winning 1 GS, and Serena could win 8 and earn far less in sponsorship.

I always wondered the same thing. She certainly seems to have the classic swimmer's body. She'd have to be a bit lighter though to be ideal.
