not sure if this is the right sub-forum, but i'm in between a 4 1/4 and 4 3/8, and don't intend on using an overgrip...question is which do i pick, the one that is a tiny bit too small or a bit too big?

If you're still growing, go with the larger one.
If not, go with the smaller one and add a 1/2 size grip sleeve. It's only $2. If you do choose this option, here's a very helpful link.

I've never tried the sleeve but intend to do so within the next week.

Let me rephrase the original post: "I'm between a 4 1/4 and 4 3/8. Using an overgrip would make it just about right, but I refuse to use one. I don't want something that would feel right. So, should I use a grip that's 1/16" too small, or one that's 1/16" too big?"

gosh, there is not that much difference between the two grip sizes in question here...i dont think you will have a problem using either...

but if you really want the correct answer, go with the person above that stated to get the smaller one and add a 1/2 size grip heat shrink sleeve on it...

i used to use a 41/2, went to a 43/8 and now believe i could play with a 41/4 too so i dont think the difference between 3/8 and 1/4 is big enough to fret over....

Sorry jjl. It wasn't personal. Just telling it like I saw it. I think you should be more open to using on overgrip if that brings the size up to where you need it--that is unless you have some reason you want to stay away from overgrips. Most people WANT to use an overgrip because they are cheaper to replace. Maybe you have a great reason you don't like overgrips. I'd like to hear it.

go with the larger one and sand it a little after, it's very easy.

this way you don't have to add any unnecessary weight to the handle
