I'm about to sign up for a two week indoor tournament.
However, I don't know in which category I should play: 3.0 or 3.5.

    My results this year:
    3.0 1-1
Lost 5-7 4-6 [Played within a week after I came back from my four week holiday in the USA]
    Won 6-1 6-1

    3.5 1-0
    Won 0-6 7-5 6-0

    4.0 0-2
    Lost 5-7 2-6
Lost 5-7 5-7 [5-4 5-3 ahead but I still managed to lose this match]

    4.5 0-1
    Lost 3-6 0-6

If you are trying to decide between 3.0 or 3.5, go with 3.5.

At first glance I thought you would be trying to decide between 3.5 and 4.0. I can't imagine being competitive at 4.0 and having any fun playing a tournament at 3.0.

That's a really amazing range of results. Either you are improving very, very fast or something is weird with the levels. Someone who can play 4.0 competitively should almost always bagel a 3.0. For sure it would not be a competitive score. Same from 4.5 to 3.5, etc.

It looks like you are in the Netherlands. Do you use NTRP there?

Edit: Looking again it looks like the outlier is your first 3.0 match. Other than that you look like strong 3.5 to weak 4.0. So take your pick :)

I agree, go with 3.5 at least, 3.0 won't give you any competition. Unless of course you are just in it for the win... which I hope not. :p

Create a brand new USTA account, self rate as a 2.5 and bask in the glory of being a cheating sandbagger like everyone else on this site!

We use different ratings in the Netherlands (3 = 9.0 3.5 = 8 etc. the Dutch pros are about 0.7). Because I didn't played any matches in 2009 I am still rated 3.0, and the indoor tournament I mentioned in the OP is unofficial so I will stay a 3.0 in 2011. However, I only played one 3.0 tournament this year and lost in the first round due to my trip in the USA [didn't play for four weeks].

The variety of results is due to two 3.5 tournaments. In the first round I played a 3.5 and in the second round a 4.5, for instance. About four years ago, I used to play about 10 hours per week as a junior. But I kind of lost interested in 2009, but regained interest in 2010 :D.

I decided to sign up for the 3.5 tournament, the matches will last 45 minutes each so it isn't a 'real' match it's more like an unofficial christmas tournament. I hope that I'm going to reach the finals :D
