This iPhone app claims to be able to tell your string tension based on the sound of your racquet.

    http://www.racquetsportsindustry.com/news/2010/04/test_your_racquets_with_an_iph.html

A question to the experienced stringers on this board - would this work - or even be semi-accurate???

It does have an option to set the your head size, linear density, string type, string thickness, but I would think that based on the various materials used in racquets now days and the various composition of strings, it would be hard to estimate tension based on the sound/frequency of the strings.

Does anyone have/use a similar tool???

Apparently you need a microphone if using the iTouch. I didn't know they sold those.

Warren Bosworth used to work with Ivan Lendl. If Ivan wasn't happy with his string tension, he would telephone Bosworth and tap his strings over the phone. Bosworth could diagnose the problem just by listening to the pitch of the strings.

I have tested it and it works pretty good.

I actually developed the same concept at home while playing with a guitar tuner. I string a lot of rackets at our club and it always struck me as useful to have something like that around. The spring loaded tester is really not too accurate and other testers are pretty expensive.

Anyway, I looked online and noticed that someone else had also developed the concept in Europe and put it to work on the PC w/ a microphone. Then one day recently our director showed me the iphone app with pretty much the exact same idea I had floating around in my head for a while, though not intended it for the iphone.

Essentially any guitar tuner style device could be made to work in this manner rather compactly and for rather cheap.

But who can go wrong for 99 cents? Although I was told it costs $9.

honestly it works pretty well help to have you own machine to test the string densities for which ever strings your using.

So the sound system in my itouch don't double as a microphone? Even if it's 3rd Gen? that stinks! looks like i'll have to research how much a microphone costs...

Update: microphone costs just under $3 from amazon.
