So with the iPhone 5 announcement, the iPhone 4 is now "free". But what if I get the "free" iPhone and also order an iPhone 5 that I want to use and will use instead?

The iPhone 4 will be "free" with a new two-year contract, I assume. So if you got the 4 and the 5, and only use the 5, you'd end up paying monthly charges for two phones.

A surprising number of individuals have multiple smartphone contracts. I know people who own 5 or 6 phones simultaneously.

So apple releases the iphone 5 that essentially has the same features many android phones have had for months if not years and its a big deal???

And for all the apple law suits; the new 5 looks and feels alot like the samsung galaxy III???

    WTF

Can't really accuse Apple of too much hypocrisy since they are likely to sue themselves as well as every other possible competitor. iphone 5 substantially similar to 4 = patent infringement!

At least they are consistent in their money grubbing stupidity.

Android still doesn't come close to iOS in terms of smoothness of the UI....this is coming from a GNex w/ Jellybean and 4S user. Though Jellybean has made significant inroads compared to ICS in the smoothness category.

I just never liked the Galaxy series form factor. Too often I'm trying to navigate one handed and it's uncomfortable to stretch the thumb to pull down the drawer for my toggles. I wonder which manufacturer can balance larger screen size with small form factor and find the perfect balance.

OTOH, also waiting for GNote 2.

I would agree..I really love my droid phone, but I have done all kinds of hacks and stuff to it as well. I'd prefer to sell it and get an iphone even though my droid specs out rather well and is one of the best phones out there.

I am wondering how much it will be to get an iphone without a contract upgrade.

This mania is why a phone has the potential to increase the GNP of the world's largest economy by .5%! That is a statement of how twisted our economic foundation has become. Thanks, but I'll stick with my "3" I got on contract for $99 2.5 years ago. Unless the AT&T guys want to give me a "4".

So AT&T will "give" me a "4" for a buck or a 4S for $99! Any advice on the 4S advantages? I know it's twice the storage (8 vs 16 g's) and has Suri (no biggie to me). Is the camera better? What else?

    Where are the widgets?

Not bad though. May well go the Apple route when I renew my contract just to see how the other half live.

That's what I'll miss most about Android, but I'm 99% sure that I'll be moving over to the Verizon iPhone in a month or two when my contract is up with TMobile.

Fragmentation on Android is awful (unless you buy Nexus, which haven't blown me away to date), and I LOVE the look and specs/features of the new Nokia Lumia 920, but there's not nearly enough app support or development to justify a move over to Windows Phone.

This is true. $199 for iPhone 5, $99 for iPhone 4S, and $0 for iPhone 4 only comes with a 2 year contract. If you order a phone and don't activate it (saving it as a backup like I did) you will be charged the full price for that phone down the line - something outrageous like $800. Don't make the same mistake! Thankfully they removed the charges after I activated the phone.

Most of my friends/co-workers/family with Android phones switched to iPhones AFTER getting an iPad. Interesting how the iPad is helping them sell iPhones from what I see.

Tom, that is great news for you! There is a huge difference between the 3 and 4/4s models and I think you will find it to your liking.

The camera on the 4s is quite a bit better (4 is not too shabby either). The 4s has a 8 megapixel camera and you can shoot 1080p videos. The 4 has a 5 megapixel camera and shoots 720p videos. The 4s has a faster processor. I believe the 4s had a dualcore processor (they claim it is about twice as fast as the A4 processor in the 4) whereas the 4 has a single-core processor.

Other than that, not much else. Both are great phones based on my experience.

Thanks, Sid! I almost "impulsed" for the 4 when I paid my bill at the AT&T store last week but they had already run out of them. The 4S or even the 5 are gonna be my options around the New Year when cash flow isn't as big an issue. My busy season kicks in then.

Tom..wait it out if you can..the 5 will be the clear choice.

BTW, I freaking hate widgets..they just take up screen and suck battery. Maybe Im the only one, but I am very glad iOS does not have them.
