Is anybody kinda disappointed that the 2012 doomsday nuts aren't putting up more...

..of a fight? I was kind of looking forward to some like crazy stories on the news of people building underwater shelters...or people building rocket ships to get off the planet or something. It was gonna be as big a laugh riot (if not bigger) than Y2k. What gives? Come on nutjobs...entertain me...

They are busy stocking their bunkers which will save them when the world ends.

oh wait, if the world ends, what use are bunkers.

What will happen is this. All the doomsday nuts will get into their bunkers in December. A few small earthquakes will result in the bunkers caving in and killing all the nuts, leaving everyone above safe.

So the world will be a saner place, lol.

Funnily just the other day, I was thinking about how its almost October, and the world is supposed to end in 2 months and no one is talking about it.

I was thinking of starting a thread joking about it but then gave up the idea. I imagine that they'll just post-pone the date.

However, the good thing is that Dec 2012 will be the end of all 'end of the world' prophecies. I don't imagine anyone will have the cheek to start them again. No one will be taken seriously again.

I don't blame them for keeping quiet since all those earthquakes and stuff that were supposed to happen this year haven't.

However, strangely winter has come very early in India this year. So something could be amiss ... :)

In 2012 if not the end of the world, all the pagan beliefs will be resurrected.

Oh oops we just discovered the remainder of the Mayan calendar in the next cave. Appa they ran out of cave.

Hey wait, *who* are these Mayans? Where are they, those wise ones who predicted the end of the world (which they didn't, but who cares about that). Where are they now ... building spaceships ? Winning Olympic Gold medals ? Are they a global superpower ?

Funny, haven't heard much of 'em guys lately ;)

I dont think it can work any other way, you have to promise them better the next time around. As the tshirt says:

    Works both ways.

Suits me. Religion (or superstition/karma etc) prevents people from killing stray dogs quite a bit in my place.

Hey, let's not get into R, or the thread will get deleted.

Two years back someone called megacedu (or HappyAndFriendlyAlways) created a thread titled "Dec 21st 2012: End of world.". Sadly, that thread was in the Rants and Raves section so it perished. HAFA was mocking all those of us who did not take EOW seriously. Pretended to be very serious. Talking about getting his bunker ready up in some mountains or god knows where.

Not disappointed at all. I'd rather not waste time at our public astronomy events answering questions about superstition-based bullsh!t when there are perfectly good questions to answer.

They were too busy predicting the end of the world that they forgot to predict the end of their own civilization.

Actually, the Mayans never predicted the end of the world. One of their several calendars happens to end near December 21, 2012 (and the date is not even certain), just like our calendars end on December 31 every year.

I was making a dig at the poor misquoted chaps. I've said from the start too that the end of a calendar does not imply the end of the world. However, no one was listening. Your link reminded me of NIBIRU (lol) or whatever. We had a serious thread on that with HAFA propounding Nibiru.

Now the dooms-dayers are saying the world won't end, but we'll go into a new era, an awakening, higher dimension, we'll meet with higher dimensional beings (my sides and hurting as i type this), and some of us will ascend to a higher dimension.

I love (read: retch at) the pseudo-scientific terminology they use: inter-dimensional beings, Theo a sixth-dimensional being, etc.

So the nuts will just reinvent themselves and go on. Actually, most already have just in case.

I was in America at that time. Went off rather uneventfully if I remember. Some subways were shut off for a couple hours. My serves were going long that day.

Next up I think is about 2038 when some meteor could pass within a 100 miles of us. Rather long wait -- I sure hope they can dig up another end of world scenario sooner than that.

Y2K was the time that the US to India software out-sourcing really took off. Till that time, it was on a small scale and there was skepticism. Y2K required massive running of tools on existing data, as well as manual modification of thousands of programs which could count only till 1999 before reverting to 0000. It also required extensive testing and certification of the modified software. Many Indian software companies used it as a launching point and have since never looked back as they moved on to more sophisticated work.

Yeah there were many companies that had huge "mainframe" departments (can't recall the names they had), "legacy" perhaps, and a tiny "internet" department which was struggling to get an e-commerce project.

I mean the companies in India, lots of nameless ones, ones that have by now vanished or changed their names several times. They typically had one large customer in the US, and a team of about 50 to 150 chaps working for that one customer, and good revenues. Then they started an internet department but usually that did not get anywhere. These chaps had old mindsets which may have worked for the Y2K kind of work -- mostly bureaucratic, babu type managers.

I agree with you, it seems that the people that believe in these theories manage to ignore tons of scientific based research, common sense, and rational thought; and cling to an idea that was gathered through misunderstandings, or false evidence. And who cares if they don't have actual evidence, they can just say that the government is intentionally hiding all evidence, for some unknown reason. This quote, talking about the Denver airport conspiracy, is so true when it comes to the conspiracy theories -

"This illogical contradiction is common in conspiracy thinking: It's a carefully-hidden top-secret plot that no one is supposed to know about—except that the conspirators made sure to leave important clues so the public would know about it." (http://news.discovery.com/space/world-domination-from-the-denver-airport-111208.html)

Uummm... perhaps you haven't heard: the Mayans didn't have leap year, so on their calender we passed "doomsday" a couple of months ago already...

Im sure that you can find such kinds of anxiety out there :) lots of freaky preparation for this and that.
On a more serious note , in reality there are many indications that there are borders and limits that life as we know it is being tested and we have to expect difficulties/ abnormal things as a result.
Nitrogen / carbon/ Phosphorous cycles are all kinda screwed up already.

I am getting my hot air balloons ready for when the end comes. I'll just rise up a safe distance from the waves/earthquakes/whatever and watch the mayhem from above. By the time the air runs out, I am counting on the dust having settled.

^ Right now the world is reeling under the shock of the impossible happening ... Andy winning a slam. Once they recover, the rockets and subterranean shelters will start on the double. I think starting November the craziness will begun.

Seats on my home built rocket are sellin out fast, anyone interested contact me fast. Mention food preference too. We can eject you on Mars or Jupiter if you don't wanna go all the way to my extravagant resort in Uranus.
