Is anybody kinda disappointed that the 2012 doomsday nuts aren't putting up more...

    Thats a tricky question.
    Some give money.
    Some give their lives.
Some are nice at mass and try to maintain it outside of church. Some make it , some ( 'most') dont.
I am not sure what makes it so hard to be considerate in 'real-life', probably the burden of the 'economy'.

No, I didn't mean it that way - that it is difficult.

I meant that I just don't get how someone can love God without knowing who he/she is, how to visualize him/her, etc. In real life, I cannot even like somebody I haven't met. How do I make the leap to loving an abstract entity like it is real?

Let me just hit you guys up with one thing to think about.

If you take a newborn child and put him in a room and keep all knowledge and teachings of religion from him/her, do you think that their mind would naturally come up with the concept of a god?

Religion is taught and passed on from generation to generation. Science is taught and passed on from generation to generation and in addition advanced upon. People were burned at the stake for being witches and in league with the devil for doing some deeds that today are no more then common knowledge. Instinctually a human being is not born with the knowledge of any deity. A human being is nothing more than an advanced animal who has come up with such concepts on their own to solve or explain some kind of unexplainable thing they experienced at one point during their development. This is why religious people say that animals don't have any kind of soul or can think... because an animal has no belief in any kind of deity. It's not an instinctual concept.

With all that said, I'm looking forward to when the Mayan calendar comes to an end.... because the Predators will come back down to earth and give us puny humans another one to go by. :D

    Sorry
But global warming is caused by human activity. That's a proven fact by the GIEC.
Only few people, mostly working to promote oil companies interests think otherwise.
That's why that point of view is very frequent in the US

^^ this is why I find your "calory (sic) burning" thread so disturbing. The more calories you burn, the more CO2 you exhale. So working out heavily and playing tennis adds to the problem of global warming.

Disturbing indeed for that(humans breathing and exhaling CO2 ) is NOT at all whats in question.

Its plainly the addition of stored CO2 in oil , coal and gas that is added
    early to the numbers of:
China 8 billion tonnes a year
US 5.6 billion tonnes a year
India 2 billion tonnes a year
Russia 1.6 billion tonnes a year.

besides that humans are decreasing biomass / forest so the CO2 has ends up heating the planet fast. + it acidifies the oceans and its waters quick too.

Human exhalation produces about 2.5 billion tons of CO2 annually (based on Dept. of Agriculture figure of about 900 grams per person per day). Clearly, this is an enormous amount that can be dramatically reduced if we'd all be less active. Stop going to the gym, stop playing tennis.

sorry, did it in a rush, you mean it's WORSE than I imagined??!! Perhaps there are other physical activities we should give up --- like endless perpetual posting about the same issue?? An activity that doubly produces CO2 from human respiration and energy to run the computer.

Giving up tennis won't do much for the thawing permafrost.

Unlike you i am interested in a sensible and reasonable approach to the issue.

In order to solve any problem , you need to assert the real causes , make weighed judgements and see what the tradeoffs are and then see where what and how it can be done.
Im not a proponent of doing away with people , like you .
People are cool imo and rather do good things than bad given the choices.

Again , people and other living creatures(BTW those are in decline so their respiratory contribution plays a cancelling role in relation to human) breathing isnt the issue. so forget that in a hurry and look at the problem at hand instead.

To return to a long forgotten conversation, DSK just paid up 6 million so make of that what you will.

I think we're way past farting cows in this debate, especially with CSG and oil shale coming.

Energy independence will be an economic good but an environmental tragedy.

Are you saying we all shale be sorry for it?

What emissions does fracking and shale oil generate?

Is it true that fracking destroys ground water from time to time?

    Pros and cons please.

Seems there are more issues that are real to deal with. The Physicial Cliffs of the Carbon and Nitrogen cycles are being transgressed.
Excess amounts of Phosphorus and declining Biomass add to the problems.
    What to do?

I suggest using sun power for a start.

the sad thing is that most industrialised countries dont respect or renew the kyoto protocol agreements: usa, canada, china, etc.
Change? Where's Obama on us climate change policy?
the argument of "if you try to fight co2 emissions, you break the growth" is false and dangerous.
There's a true cleantech industry, in solar, wind power and hydro energy.
It could create jobs, business, etc
But again, the oil lobby is doing everything to break this Renewables energy momentum.

The idea that economy and environment cant prosper simultaneously is a ludicrous an idea.

Its been hammered in by the media though...

Just try to check out what guys like Amory Lovins and William McDonough have done in business and architecture.

Again, denied by the NASA in the faq I posted earlier

Q: Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth?

A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

I am just watching a documentary and think that Mayans are no ordinary civilization and in many ways pretty advanced, but it just may be the end of the calender or just some sort of transformation begins to happen starting at 21st, but definitely not the end of the world.

Well, I've been keeping this secret to myself but, I figured I'd let everybody else in, just incase.

The threat is real and God has tasked me with saving the world. I'm working on it now and times ticking but, if you all wake up tomorrow and everything is the same you will know that I have succeeded.

In which case monetary rewards are welcome.

Looks like those coca-chewing Mayan madcaps no longer have the pull in the western hemisphere like they used to. Me? I loved their getups and headpieces but I also thought the lads were being a tad presumptuous with their "Imma tell you WHEN it's all goin' down!" 'declarin' ; )
