they aren't the real rankings, and when they created it, they added some confusion (between the entry ranking and the race) among the fans because it was all about the race (for instance, people were wondering how on earth santoro could be #1 ?!).

but despite all this, they do mean something : they do indicate who is in better position to qualify for to the (year end) masters at one moment of the year. so i think they should have discretely kept them somewhere on the ATP website (naming it "race to the masters" or something like this), as they do for girls or for male double teams, especially now that most of the people got used to it since 2000.

we could still do it by ourselves, but hey, we are lazy, aren't we ? ;)

I stopped paying attention to "race" long before the ATP dropped this meaningless classification.

yes they did not confuse me I knew what they were. they only came into play at the very end of the year to let you know who was in the race to qualify (like you said, if Santoro is #1 the race is obviously meaningless at that point) but by the time this comes around, everyone's race and rank are just about the same.

true, we won't know in June EXACTLY when Rafa/Roger have qualified but whoever is the top 8 after Paris goes.

Forgetting "race" and talking about actual rankings suppose if Nadal gets out in the semi-final here and Federer wins it all...will Federer get #1 back?

if Nadal loses in the semis he'll keep his 13,160 pts

Fed would gain 1280 by winning bringing his total to 12,980.

man I hate the new system

Federer has 10700 points right now. How would adding 1280 points come up to 12980? I don't understand.

in fact he would lose points because they award less points than before to the finalist, semi-finalists, etc.

in the case of a slam SF, last year it was 900 points (taking into account the doubling) and now it will be 720 points.
this combined with the doubling of points, it surely brings some confusion !

    let's take some examples :

    - last year federer won 450 points (by being a semi-finalist) that were doubled at the beginning of 2009, and "became" 900 points.
    - last year djokovic won 1000 points (by winning the tournament) that were doubled at the beginning of 2009, and "became" 2000 points.

    - if federer wins he will gain 2000 points (this year) and lose 900 points (of last year) = +1100 points.
    - if djokovic loses in the SF, he will gain 720 points (this year, see previous post) and lose 2000 points (of last year) = -1280 points.

    i hope this helps ! ;)

wait whaaat. I thought all the new numbers implied that player's point had already been adjusted to the new system; i.e. rafa's points now are what they would have been at the end of last year had the new ranking system already been in place for 2008.

if that's not the case, where did all these new point totals come from?

In front of my computer, obviously
there is someone at MTF who is keeping 'race points' this year. I believe the thread has been stickied at the top of the general messages section.

Personally, I'm glad it's gone but I think it's due to pop up on the ATP website as the 'Race to London' at some point later in the season.

by the way, they still take them into account in the player profiles on the AO website.

for instance, see "Current ATP Champions Race Position" of richie there :

Thanks a lot, I understand the system. I was just pointing out that 10700 +1280 doesn't add up to 12980 (but 11980). Tacou corrected it, so everything is clear now.
