Is Azarenka not well liked on tour?

Not that she's the most outgoing person, but every time she's interviewed she seems nice enough.

So, John Wertheim's "50 Thoughts" column about the AO, really, really surprised me, when he noted:

"Last week, the excellent Sydney Morning Herald columnist Richard Hinds noted Azarenka's poor reputation among drivers and locker-room attendants while Josh Eagle (a commentator and husband of former player Barbara Schett) talked on the radio about sneering contempt Victoria Azarenka has for those not named Victoria Azarenka. The remarks and anecdotes don't define the players -- I could give counterexamples of each acting graciously and admirably -- but they are part of the record factor when the public opinion is formed."

Of course, that doesn't mean she's treating other players poorly, but, again, it really surprised me. Are these sources legit? Are these reputable commentators/journalists?

I've also heard she is not nice to the ball boys and I definitely noticed at the AO that she is a bit snippy with them, moreso than other players.

I guess all those donuts she buys everyone isn't enough to keep them silent about her behavior.

She comes across as unpleasant generally. This doesn't surprise me in the least. I hope she can form a rivalry with Kvitova but get spanked in the process more often than not.

Well she is the Djokovic of the WTA. When Djokovic was cocky snob back in 08!

I wish for that too. I have read stories about Azarenka treating the ball boys/girls like crap. Combine that with her drama queen retirement record over the years (she makes Djokovic look like a novice) and her annoying shrieks and I have to say that I am not fond of her at all. I pretty much wanted anybody else to win the AO besides Azarenka.

I said in another thread that I can't believe I would be supporting her to win this tournie, and it was because she was playing Anoya Screamapova in the finals.

There are so many annoying players on the WTA, its like you have to cheer for the player who has the least irritating personality/habits/grunt/playing style. I'm kind of left with Clijsters and Li Na who seem pleasant enough, don't bark/scream, and have decent game. The rest all get on my nerves for some reason or another.

I don't know if it was just me, but I noticed a cold response from the Melbourne crowd after her victory. I think part of it is her mannerisms and her shrieking. At one point she tells the referee to tell the crowd behind her to stop talking but then goes on to shriek. I think she has a lot of growing up to do to win some fans over.

In her victory speech she did thank the ball-boys & girls and said that she appreciated them even if she sometimes gave them a hard time. It sounded sincere and gracious.

She comes off quite well in her interviews IMO.

Her and Berdych should get together and be the most hated mixed doubles team of all time.

i'm glad she beat shriekapova because tennis shouldn't be ruled by 6 foot 5 freaks of nature who hit the ball hard but can't run from one corner to the other without tripping over her own feet. azarenka at least has mobility and a little bit of variety to her game.

but when she won the final point and started doing that "my gosh where am i? how did i get here? what just happened?!" bad actress nonsense. ugh. i flipped off the tv.

ok fine. i turned the sound back on and watched sportscenter.

I dont the Azarenka is well liked by anyone much less the tour.

Commentators and fans cant stand her annoying screeching and screaming and she generally has a off-putting personality.

Maybe this win will now change her from bitter to a more pleasant player on tour. She's 22 and did think about retiring from tennis.

She looks so much like Chris Evert to me. If she is anything like Chrissie she is a total put on. A fake who smiles for the cameras but who swears off camera like a truck driver, with an insatiable appetite for men.

i could be wrong but i believe azarenka is playing for the other team. don't think the announcers said anything but that woman in vika's players box next to her coach and trainer - pretty sure that was her significant other. it's all good though. she can have whoever she wants in her box. none of my bidness.

Are you talking about the Asian woman? That is her agent/manager who is also married to Azarenka's coach. Azarenka also thanked her boyfriend in her speech.

I like her way more than Screamapova. At least Azarenka is more fun to watch, more variety.
