I'm creating this thread with a clear title so that it can be bumped later one way or another.

I was very high on Sampras, but Djokovic's play this year has convinced me that he will become one of the all-time greats.

Sure Sampras won fourteen slams, but Djokovic is from Serbia; Serbia . . . man.

So, who is better, Novak Djokovic now or Pete Sampras in his prime?

Umm, gee! That is a tough one, but I'd have to go with Sampras on this one (this remark is glistening with sarcasm). Sampras already won a GS title by Djokovic's age, and their games don't match up at all (Sampras with the dominating serve and volley mostly, and Djokovic with his mostly baseline all court).

    LOL!

Well, logically it's possible for every top player to become the greatest. The possibility exists. So Novak can. But will he? I don't think so and he's certainly nowhere at this stage to be considered greater than Pete Sampras.

Without question, he does have the game (among the current crop of baseline bashers) to win several slams and go on to become an all time great.

Joker is bettern than Laver, Sampras, Federer, Borg, and Nadal combined

He won three masters shield this year and beat Nadal and Federer. Clearly, he's the best ever. Why do we have to have a poll. It is so obvious.

If you could get all five of the other guys in their prime on one side of the net, Djokovic with still beat them. They could even serve five balls all at once, he he would still break them!

    He's amazing!!

How about if I throw in JMac, Connors, Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Don Budge, Krammer? These twelve guys all in their prime on one side, hitting twelve balls simultaneously against Djokovic and he'll still win.

He's the best! If only he plays golf he could beat Tiger. If he plays baseball, he could hit 800 home runs.

HAHAHAHA...for a second I thought this could be a serious thread.
    And then I saw this.

Gotta give the OP props for humour.
Must say I've never heard that argument before...but yeah, I wouldn't put it past some of the newly emerging Nole trolls to use it. lmao.
"I've never won a single slam...but hey I was bombed on repeatedly during the 90s.."

djokovic is not even close to sampras as a player, he will be very good, im saying max 6-8 slam, but fed will be right there for wimby for the next 5 years, nadal will be there at the french for the 6-8 years, so either australia of us open are his best bets, i would be more so towards the us open bc depending how hard he works for australia that one will up in the air.

OK this is getting crazy. All the guy has done is win 2 Masters title, that is it. 2 Masters title. He hasnt even reached a Slam final yet. This is so typical of many of this forum, someone wins an event of any importance, and suddenly they are the new god or goddess of the game, maybe of all time.

Think so ? Well maybe .. ;) Nevermind, he is not that far behind sampras at 20, he just had to take it slower due to physical weakness. Pete was very athletic from early days ..

Is this serious? I see youir point, he has managed to beat the best player of all time - Federer (something Sampras never managed even on his favourite surface), and also taking out the worlds no2 and no3 at the same event. I think he maybe needs to prove himself on the bigger stage but yeah i think he would give Sampras a real headache if they met both in their primes.

I am not sure how you got my post but lets say its premature for this. I am from belgrade and I still think he might be nr 1 in future and everythign but goat , dont know , you never know that. Most likely not but lets say everyone has different favourite player so goat is not something that can be determined just like that ? Is it 14 slams winner or the one who took grand slam in one year or the one who got 5 of wimbledones and french opens or one who dominates the sport for 3.5 years or .. you got my point, matter of opinion.

Word is, the exhibition match at the end of this year will now be between Sampras and the Joker. Joker's GOAT eligibility was validated after scoring extremely high in SoBad's scientific study (due to his latest coup at the fashion show. showing chest hair through a polyester suit? stylish.) Federer's GOAT ranking has now dropped to #11 due to a bad looking backhand and his own perfume.

Forget Sampras, the real GOATs are Nadal, Volandri, Canas, Gasquet, Nalbandian, Safin, and Murray. Oh yeah and Federer too, he's beaten the world #1 more times than all of the others combined.

I love novak djokovic, but sampras is the best of all time, plus who doesn't like Sampras? Also, like it or not djokovic is playing in an era where there is no dominant serve and volley player like sampras. I don't think that Djokovic could handle that style of play, however i think that he has the ability to win the U.S. Open.

Novak Đoković is certainly a good player but he has a way to go yet to prove he is superior to Sampras.

I like to see plenty of evidence in top flight events in order to evaluate and rate a player. While Đoković's form has been good he needs prolong this period and prove it is not a fleeting run of good form before I would be even willing to consider him a top 3 player.

I think many of the threads on this site relating to Đoković are somewhat premature in hailing his greatness.

Would you be willing to put your house on his winning in Cincinnati?

Agreed. Djokovic's skills are not great or even suggest legendary status for the future. In the U.S. Open where Sampras won his first GS title, it was clear his skills were on another level.

When Djokovic beats Federer in the next 7 or 8 slam finals, then the topic starter should come knocking. Until then, this poll is pure, steaming, fly-covered BS.

This thread is hilarious, particularly the poll options.

Are there a lot of people on this forum that are not native English speakers? It is not only this thread, but I've seen quite a few threads here where an obvious joke/parody/satire/etc. is completely missed and responded to as though it were dead serious by quite a few people.

  49. It's fairly hard to tell because players came from different eras, but I'd give the nod to Djokovic. After all, I've never seen Gus Sampras play.

    Lets see:

    First serve-Sampras
    Second serve-Sampras
    Forehand-probably Sampras
    Backhand-Djokovic
    Return of Serve-Djokovic
    Movement-Sampras
    Volleys-Sampras
    Overhead-Sampras
Mental Game-Sampras (although Djokovic is excellent for a young player here)
    Intangibles-Sampras

    Overall score - Sampras 8, Djokovic 2
    Slam titles - Sampras 14, Djokovic 0
Slam titles at same age even - Sampras 1, Djokovic 0
    Overall outcome - NC
