It has become a growing trend during the clay court swing and was shown again today in the final. If it continues, it could affect his title defence at both Halle and Wimbledon. Federer has a great 2nd serve but on grass you really need to make a high percentage otherwise opponent will just take huge cuts at 2nd serve leading to bp's chances (see Federer vs Davydenko for further details). I hope it is a blip but this has become chronic over the past 2 months and must change if Federer is to match Borg's feat of 5 straight Wimbledon crowns.

i thought it was a fluke type thing when cash's article talked about it, but now i realize what a problem it was the whole time...

however i think it will settle a little at halle, and should not be a factor at wimbledon, where federer typically has a 60% 1st serve percentage...

its just not as effective on clay as it is on every other surface...there was a bunch of his first serves that would have gone for an ace if it was grass or hard courts....
