Maybe there's someone here you better understands the math than I, but it seems rather impossible.

He can gain 955 in Paris, but that would still put him behind Nadal even if Nadal skips Paris/WTF.

Race to London Nadal is leading the race with 11,490 following with Djokovic 8,790. 2,700 is the difference. If Djokovic wins Shanghai, Paris and WTF, that will give him 3,500 points. But Nadal will have to mess up really badly for the rest of the season. So yes he has a chance but very slim and unlikely.

As much as I like Djokovic, I hope Nadal secures it. He has outright been the best player, and hopefully can end the season as number. Fully deserved for his exceptional level of play this season.

If Djokovic wins Shanghai, he will be 400 points behind Nadal in the ranking. If he loses the final to Delpo, he'll be 800 points behind Nadal.

No, and if it did happen it would be an all time farce and ATP rankings would forever become as obselete as the WTA rankings are now valued.

Can anyone kind enough to tell me what Nadal has to do to keep his No,1 ranking?

  9. Not at all, Nadal didn't show in Australia and crashed out in the first round of Wimbledon.

If Nadal gains 500 more ranking points, he'll be #1 even if Djokovic wins Shanghai, Paris and WTF.

    Not much to be honest.

Nadal now has 11670 points in the race. Djokovic has 9210 if you count the Shanghai final.

*If Djokovic wins Shanghai, Paris and WTF (without losing a match), which is quite unlikely, he would have 12110 points.

Nadal just needs to gain 450 points in Basel, Paris and WTF.

In reality, he probably has done enough already as Djokovic won't win all those tournaments.

*I'm assuming Djokovic is only playing these tournaments. Feel free to correct me if he's playing an extra tournament.

Yes he has been the best player this season, but if Djokovic wins Beijing, Shanghai, Basle, Paris, and the WTF back to back then that's an astonishing run, and if it was enough to oust Nadal then he deserves it.

Not that I see him doing that. It's very hard to win those indoor tournaments back to back. That's what makes Federer's run in 2011 so special when you look back on it.

Don't rule out Del Potro tomorrow either.

What are you talking about? Serena is clearly number one on the WTA Tour and the rankings reflect this she won 2 out of the 4 slams and 10 WTA titles. Serena is also over 3000 points ahead of Azarenka.

I do believe Nadal should finish the year at number one, but Nadal's indoor record is poor he just doesn't do well indoors.

Nadal's problem is he missed the AO due to illness/match fitness problems and he bombed out of Wimbledon. He participated in those or made it a bit deeper it would be wrapped up. Djokovic has been a consistant force throughout the year and has the points to show for it. I do hope Nadal finishes the year #1 though, he deserves it, if he didn't it would make a bit of a mockery of the rankings which is not what the sport needs.

After Shanghai, Nadal is increasing his lead over Djokovic further in terms of world ranking points, even if Djokovic wins Shanghai. Nadal has zero points to defend until February.

If Djokovic wins the final against Delpo, Nadal will be ahead of him by 400 ranking points.

If Djokovic loses the final, Nadal will have 800 ranking points more than the Serb.

Nadal is currently ahead of Djokovic by 40 points. So after Shanghai, i.e. as of Monday 14 October, Nadal has increased his lead over Djokovic in terms of ranking points, even if Djokovic wins Shanghai.

25 posts and no one mentioned that Djokovic can win 210 ATP points in Davis Cup final.

So if Nole doesn't loose a match in until the end of 2013, Rafa must gain about 700 atp points to be YE no1.

I don't think Djoko should be focused on ranking right now. He missed that ship at the USO. It's more about winning titles for him now and try and pass Murray (they're both at 4 for this season, which may not seem like a lot but is still the best after Rafa. Delpo has 3 and could tie Djoko/Murray if he won his 4th tomorrow.)

75 points is team bonus awarded to a singles player who wins seven live matches and his team wins the competition.

Nadal needs about 500 points within the next 3 tournaments (3,000 points possible) to secure YE#1. Once, he passes that threshold, there is nothing Djokovic can do - even winning Paris and the WTF will make no difference.

So Djokovic has to pretty much win Shanghai, Paris and the WTF undefeated and if Nadal skips Paris and Basel and only wins one match at WTF...then Djokovic might finish number 1. Pretty unlikely and would be pretty unfair.

But it's not like he couldn't do it. I really think Cvac will finish the year at #1, and there will be nothing Nadal can do about it.

If Djoko won everything and Rafa messed up everything, 1st goes to Djokovic. Nothing unfair - it simply represents overall performance of the last year. However, it is not likely to happen. Nadal will most probably have well deserved YE1 (and I'm Nole's fan).
Djokovic shouldn't even bother chasing the 1 right now, but focus on WTF and Davies Cup and then AO. No1 will come by itself, next year when Rafa has to deffend all those points.

I think Djokovic isn't playing basel this year. I checked his homepage. Nadal is going to play Basel and Paris so I believe he finishes this year as No.1. And if Del potro wins Shanghai today I think it seals the deal for the No.1 ranking.

Well Cvac defended his points in Shanghai, so no points lost there. If he adds Basel in he is surely going to win that too. Paris and the WTF I think he will win as well so tell me why what I said was wrong. He will absolutely finish the year at #1, you can bet on it. Nadal sucks this time of year, and I don't see him doing much of anything until spring of next year. This has pretty much always been Nadal's pattern, and you should know that unless you have had your head buried in the sand for the past decade.

Isn't that pathetic? Nadal can beat joker at the FO and The USO and yet Joker can be considered better?

Something is very wrong with this ranking system .
