Is it really the ASSOCIATION of tennis professionals or just a bureaucracy.

I think Nadal, Roddick and Murray all hit the nail on the head. Surprisingly I think Roddick came across in the most politically correct way. They all said pretty much the same message to ESPN, "Yeah, we shouldn't have been out there". I think when you have a recent World No. 1 and defending champion going out there and saying "We're not protected, don't worry about the money involved, our safety means nothing." then you've got a problem...

Maybe what we need in professional tennis is some sort of player representatives organization that if players feel conditions are unsafe for whatever reason and both players agree then the tournament just has to deal with it. When you have 3 top players in the world, all whom have been ranked inside the top 2 before, going collectively from different countries to a tournament director and all in agreement that something is wrong, then something should happen.

I would love to discuss between this collective forum what some options might be? Not that we have any affect on the situation but the bottom line is that what happened today is complete and total bull$#!+

One thing you have to understand, there are millions waiting to watch them on TV. They get paid amount of money because of viewers they get. Talk about any other sport where there is no risk involved. In tennis all injuries are due to player's style of play not because of other factors. Real men play football even in snow.

Two things
1. Try slipping on a hardcourt and saying it feels like falling on a cloud. It hurts a lot.
2. Tennis isn't football. Football is played on turf which is much softer than concrete. Try playing football on concrete in the rain.

Real men don't wear 20 lbs of padding to protect their body, and don't have to use cleats to run on grass.

Time to outsourced tennis pros

I've enough of the coddling of overpaid pros.

The ATP and WTA should outsourced tennis to India and China. Bring on these cheaper and more willing pros.

Real men play 16 games a year with an average of 12 minutes of actual play time per game? Sounds like a bunch of pansies to me. How many NFL teams are outdoor? How many are in the north? With 16 games a year how many games are actually played in snow?

I'm solidly behind the players in this dispute. They are being treated badly, as if their concerns are relegated way down the list of priorities.

I'm not convinced.

I get the feeling that they are/were afraid that their ass was gonna get kicked and are trying to weasel their way out looking for the lame excuse of "ideal" curcustances to tennis (like as if they have a right to such a thing

Remember that the surface is the same for THEIR OPPONENTS as well.

So I'm afraid they have no case AFAIAC :)

I played football in various leagues for years in Scotland.
Any hint of frost and the games were cancelled.
Tennis courts eg concrete and the like are far harder than grass.

HERE IS WHERE THE USTA SPENDS THE MONEY NOT SPENT ON A ROOF

3 courts should have roofs.. $250 Million per year in revenue from the US Open, another G0d knows how much from USTA Membership fees and tournaments... and they can't put roofs? They should have 3 roofs. It's a non-for-profit company.

All this money and they can't even produce a champion. What are they giving back to the sport? $9 for a Water, $13 for a Crepe?

They suck everyone dry and then give nothing back.

PMAC Commentating, Davis Cup Captain AND Director of Junior Development???

UMMM can anyone say conflict of interest????????

AND he cut over $100,000 that went to wheelchair tennis. When will the people stand up for some change? Or will they bend over and spread em like in every other aspect of the American's life?

Honestly some rinky dink tennis tournament run by crooks is the least of America's Worries right now. Its like whining about Wimbledon's strawberries when the city is burning down from riots.

Best to just start calling the Greedy USTA and the crooks out and let them destroy themselves. What we are seeing right now is the slow disintigration of the USTA. In a couple of years your going to see people jumping ship. The sport has become a farce. This was inevitable.

Yes, they have a right to not play on a dangerous surface. Screw the idiot organizers who only believe in the dollar and not the safety of the human reason they make money in the first place.

Remember that the surface is the same for THEIR OPPONENTS as well.

Then its up to the opponents to step up and make the same compalints. No one is holding guns to their heads, warning them against making a stand. In other words, each needs to grow a pair, buy a pair or pay someone with a pair to stand up for their best interests.

Think of the ATP as being a union..and an ineffective one. They are the employees and the tournaments are the employers. To be most effective the pros should all go on strike. But playing is the only way that they make a living. So the idea of going on strike is unlikely. No play, no money, no play no ranking, no play, no endorsements. So they are at the mercy of their employers, the tournaments. And that's how pro tennis is. And always will be.

Irrelevant.

This is not about NFL. That was but one example.

Other sports like soccer also play during pouring rain and cold snow wind and scorching sunshine.

IOW you have no excuse to cover your beloved tennis pansies.

Yeah! Now yer talking.

Let's face it: tennis players are pussies. Unlike most other athletes in mid action, tennis players run to the exit the moment they get an itch, they MTO, they get to sit down every couple of minutes, they need shades/umbrellas, they eat, they go to the toilet... etc etc... all in the middle of sporting action!

And now they are squealing and sniveling that they're in mortal danger cuz the weather might be not dry enough? Get outta here! What a bunch of lily assses! Please somebody throw them pompoms!

I will give you all the money I have if you go down to the USO stadium right now and try and play someone like rafael nadal

Do it.

Let's see you sprint side to side on wet court without scraping the skin off your knees, if not falling on your hip and cracking it open.

protip: buy some health insurance before you try this out.

Ever heard of the Ice Bowl? Plenty of footballers play on fields with frost during the winter. Believe me, falling on that is like falling on concrete.

That's amateur football. We're talking about professional athletes. If you lived in Scotland you'll be well aware that the SPL regularly plays through snow over Christmas, as do many northern European football leagues (not to mention the NFL).

Grand Slams run themselves through the national association and under the umbrella of the ITF and outside the province of the ATP.

So its the American bureaucracy that runs the Slam.

Why can't there be some international consensus to reform the sport. I think we could all agree that there could definitely be some changes that could make it a much better sport for all involved (reforming the tournament schedule, adding in an off season etc...). I know it would be difficult to do, but tennis really needs a structure that includes a comissioner and players reps.

GOOD THING THEY WEAR CLEATS TO PREVENT SLIPPAGE

How is no one not making this argument? On wet grass, cleats make it damn near impossible to fall if you've got half a brain for running.

Football players don't wear padding except shin protectors.

Which football are you talking of, American or Soccer. Soccer players go throug more than American football players, which is whom I was talking about.

Soccer players get my respect.

Cleats do more harm than good on frost-ridden ground.

I dont think I agree. Flat bottom shoes slide very easily on frost; at least cleats dig in somewhat when you're running, even if it's a little extra grip it's helpful.

You clearly haven't played on truly frosted ground. It's like running on concrete. If you wear cleats you will slip and break your face.
