He was the only player who took a set off of Federer in Madrid. So my new clay court rankings look like this:

    1. Federer
    2. Roddick
    3. Nadal
    4. Djokovic/Del Potro

Long live the new kings of clay, Federer and Roddick!

I hope Fed and Rod end up in opposite halves of the RG draw. I am looking forward to that match up in the final.

If people are even considering ROddick to be the 2nd best clay courter today, what the hell does that tell you about this current era of clay court tennis ?

Don't forget Haas at 5, since he took a set off of Roddick 6-1. I'd argue he's top 3 just for that.

I think the conclusion to that is that Roddick > Sampras on clay any day.

If Roddick is in Fed's half this year then I think Fed's chances of winning RG are significantly less. Roddick seems to have Roger's number over the course of their careers, and Roddick's fluid, quick movement will blow Roger away

Bjorn Phau, AKA the Bjorn Borg of this generation, needs to be somewhere in the top 5 discussion, as he beat Haas in Houston.

Hass beat himself and CHOKED in Houston, so your whole point fails.

I agree; it's a pity that Roddick has a weak serve, unlike Nadal.

If all Fed has to deal with is Roddick at RG , and Djoker and Nadal beat the crap out of each other and have some long drawn out match prior to the RG finals, you may as well hand Fed the French Open title.

Well, since Wawrinka beat Fed a few weeks ago, but Stan lost to Del potro in madrid, so real rankings are:

    1. Del Potro
    2. Wawrinka
    3. Federer
    4. Roddick
    5. Haas.

All this shows you is how fast the conditions in Madrid actually are. Roddick would get embarrassed at RG against Federer. Of course he won't actually get there to be able to play Fed.

Roddick the second best claycourter?????!??!?! Are you guys serious??? How could you not rate him as the best? Roddick was obviously tired after he had that grueling match with Haas, so that's why he went away in the third against fed. Fed got lucky Roddick had such a tough match against Haas the other day. Roddick will surely take the FO title this year.

Awesome post. Following ******* logic, Roddick actually played the real final against Tommy Haas.

Very good point. Also Soderling got closer to taking a set off Federer then Nadal so he should be #4.

dont forget that since haas tired roddick out with a 3 setter, roddick's match with fed is meaningless...so andy could still be the real number one

Roddick hadn't even played the whole cc season and he still took a set off of Fed.

At RG he shall be unstoppable!!

Roddick is in much better physical condition than Nadal if he can take a three setter and then still put up a fight against the number 1.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Roddick only lost to Federer because he was exhausted from playing the real final against Tommy Haas the day before. Updated clay court rankings:
    1. Roddick
    2. Haas
    3. Federer
    4. Nadal/Djokovic
    5. Del Potro

Roddick would have destroyed Nadal in the final, unlucky for him he had to play Federer in the quarters.

Very true. Federer-Roddick was the real final.
Now as ironically as it is Roddick’s improvements the last few years, his all around game and more patient baseline play did not make him any better except on clay. He’s now a decent player at least on relatively fast clay.
