I can't seem to figure out mixed doubles? it shouldn't be that hard but i just feel like its way more casual than competitive, the major difference is that I feel like I can hit anything and it will be amazing, my team captain always tells me "no ego", and I get that, but it's cost me matches too:confused:
i'll play with anyone on the team too, maybe that's my problem , no real partner, but then again that happens in men league too:?

I don't think that you really explained what the issue is. What you said was that every shot you hit is amazing but you aren't winning?

It's just like competitive mixed league softball. It is supposed to be more relaxed than casual yet you still get guys there that wear uniforms and use the best Miken bats. They play just like "A" league mens and feel cool about crushing the ball past women. I think it is quite funny but it must be en ego boost of some sort.

I tend to approach mixed league in a more casual way. I prefer mixed to men's doubles anyway. It just seems like it is more fun. Don't get me wrong, it is still competitive but on a different level. I try to play well but it is a different mindset for me.

USTA mixed seems much more competitive than casual to me. Club mixed dubs seems the opposite- very casual. So yes my mindset changes quite a bit between the two.

I play differently in that I don't play mixed. It's much different than men's in which I play tennis.

This thread is basically the reason not to play it.

That's funny. It is a different game. It's all about the woman who is your partner. And you can't make any mistakes because you are supposed to be the stronger player. Unless you play with a woman who is far better than you.

As far as relaxed, in league play its play to win. Nothing casual about officially sanctioned competition. Ever.

hey I just started mixed doubles, is it ok to hit hard first serves to the women? Some guys seem to hit only second-serves to them.

In social-mxed, hit topspin serve so you don't look like a meaney.

Flat, big first serves? What level are you?

At the least just play regular tennis whatever that is, or plan to lose. The real weirdness in mixed revolves around the two weaker players on court getting most balls hit to them. It's fun when you have a female partner who is intensely competitive and fights through their weaknesses.

I have a fast flat serve that goes in about 25% of the time. I whip it out on occasion when I'm in a groove. But I hit it at a girl the last time and clearly she had no idea what to do with it. Unfortunately my topspin second serves are super weak at this point.

Mixed doubles is a good place for me to tee up my big FH, and go at the woman to see how competent she really is. In actuality, they are intimidated by their male counter parts.

This is the problem with mixed; d a's like this whose whole strategy is to nail every shot at the female.

I always begin by taking a little off of everything, from serves, passing shots and overheads. If they complain that I'm going to easy on them, then I turn up the juice. If I'm losing, I turn up the juice. Otherwise, just have fun.

I play some pretty competitive mixed and I can tell you that if you take it easy on women that are 5.0 and up players they will punish you for it. They can hold there own and more. You play your game just as you would any other time or you lose.

I think you really have to be honest with yourself (and partner) re: how competitive is the match. If honest, there isn't a wrong answer.... but if all on court are not in sync, prepare for issues.

Of course there are occasions in mixed doub's when my mind is all over her body... I'm only half-kidding here. Mixed doub's can be a wondrous thing with, um, let's say "elements" that don't factor into other settings (at least for me). If nothing else, I think it inspires us to play in a slightly more civilized nature.

Then again, it gets flat out KRAZY when playing with ladies who are at least as strong and solid on the court. Wondrous indeed...

    easy pickin's

The mindset I notice the most is that the men often think they should hit more balls than the women, so they take balls that the woman should actually hit. I guess if the female partner doesn't mind, carry on. But I start to get annoyed if it's excessive because I want to play! I'm like, why don't you guys just go play singles together?

It's really no fun overall when the men are three levels above the women, in the first place. Sometimes the men "go easy" on the women, sometimes they pick on the women - depending on how competitive they are. I wouldn't want to play in a match like that. I only play mixed when everybody's close to the same level. And yes, before you get started - there are plenty of guys I can beat!

I started playing men's doubles in the spring and will be playing mixed doubles (for the first time ever-even casual/social play) this summer. Went to practice and played better in mix vs. men's league...maybe more relaxed? I consciously did take some pace off my serve when going to the female but I think other than that, I played my normal erratic game.

In looking at early match scores, it seems the 3.5/3.5 pairings are doing better than the 4.0 male/3.0 female pairings. Without seeing how the matches were played, I would assume there would be some picking on the 3.0woman. Is this how 7.0 mixed results tend to be?

Forget about gender, just play as if they are two tennis players. As such, hit to the weaker, hit rocketships at the stronger, play the ball low and away from the netperson, overheads up the middle until they leave the sidelines open.
